Dental facial Cellulitis

When a carious lesion impinges on the dental pulp, pulpitis follows and, ultimately, necrosis of the pulp occurs. Untreated necrosis may lead to a localized abscess or a spreading infection into the surrounding soft tissue that results in cellulitis.

Untreated infection can spread to deep facial spaces resulting in airway compromise, sepsis, or infection
of the orbit and brain.
Symptoms
Pain, often with fever
Facial swelling
Patients with severe infection may exhibit:
Swelling involving orbit or deep spaces of the neck
Trismus and dysphagia
Unstable vital signs and other evidence of invasive infection
Treatment & Referral
Localized cellulitis in select patients:
Outpatient oral antibiotics and analgesics
Prompt dental referral
Severe cellulitis involving deep facial spaces or with sepsis:
Hospitalize with surgical consultation
CT imaging to rule out deep space involvement
IV antibiotics and appropriate analgesics
Extraction or root canal to prevent recurrence

Facial cellulitis is often caused by a dental abscess, which is a bacterial infection at the base of the tooth.
Can you get cellulitis from a tooth infection?
A severe tooth infection can lead to a bacterial build-up called dental abscess. If you don't get treatment for an abscess, the bacteria can spread to the neighboring tissues on your face. As a result, you can get facial cellulitis on your cheeks and around your eyes
