Latest June 2025 FDA DRUG APPROVAL: Harliku (Nitisinone) Tablets

💊 Harliku (nitisinone) is approved for the treatment of Alkaptonuria (AKU) – a rare genetic condition.

🧬 What is Alkaptonuria (AKU)?
A rare genetic disorder caused by a buildup of homogentisic acid (HGA), leading to dark urine, joint damage, and tissue pigmentation (ochronosis).

🔹 Mechanism of Action:
Nitisinone inhibits the enzyme 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD), effectively reducing the formation of HGA and its accumulation in tissues.

Ms. Shahrukh Kamal, MPhil Scholar in Department of Pharmacy, University of Peshawar has successfully defended her MPhil thesis under the supervision of Dr Sami Ullah, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacy, University of Peshawar.

Ms Shahrukh Kamal's thesis focussed on Preclinical Evaluation of selected Chalcones for Analgesic, Antipyretic and Anti-inflammatory activities.

The External Examiner was Dr Naveedullah, Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacy, University of Swabi.

The defense was attended by the chairman Department of Pharmacy, Prof. Dr. Fazli Nasir, faculty members and students.
