Hydroxycarbamide, also known as hydroxyurea, is a drug primarily used to manage certain blood disorders, such as sickle cell anemia, polycythemia vera, and chronic myelogenous leukemia.

☑️It works by inhibiting the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase, which reduces DNA synthesis in rapidly dividing cells. This mechanism helps to decrease the production of abnormal blood cells or hemoglobin, thus alleviating symptoms and preventing complications in affected individuals.

☑️Hydroxycarbamide is typically taken orally and has proven to be effective in increasing fetal hemoglobin levels, particularly in sickle cell anemia, where it reduces pain crises and improves quality of life. While generally well-tolerated, its use may be associated with side effects like bone marrow suppression, gastrointestinal discomfort, and skin changes, requiring regular monitoring.
