Umbilical Venous Catheterisation

▪️Umbilical Stump showing 2 umbilical arteries and 1 umbilical vein used for umbilical venous catheterization

INDICATIONS
 All babies 12.5%, parenteral nutrition or inotropes)

CONTRAINDICATIONS
 Umbilical sepsis
 Necrotising enterocolitis (NEC)
 Gastroschisis/exomphalos

COMPLICATIONS
 Air embolism
 Bleeding resulting
 Refractory hypoglycaemia
 Infection
 Thrombus formation
 Cardiac tamponade
 PN ascites may require urgent abdominal paracentesis
