🥲 Piriformis Syndrome - This Is What Causes It

Apart from the obvious perpetrator - the Piriformis muscle, I wanted to show you how the sciatic nerve passes underneath or through it and explain why the muscles would cause problems for the nerve.

the normal function of the piriformis is to externally rotate the femur. It essentially pulls the greater trochanter (head of femur) towards the sacrum where it originates from.

The interesting fact about the piriformis is that when the hip is in flexion - it becomes a medial rotator - crazy yes?

Needless to say, this muscle can be quite intriguing and because of its complicated nature it can get a lot of tightness which can then cause issues to the sciatic nerve.
