National University of Medical Sciences has reiterated its resolve to emerge as a role model for the country by promoting new ideas and imparting quality education to its students who can make a difference to the economic and social wellbeing of the society.

This was stated by Dean Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Prof Dr. Azam Chaudhary of NUMS while commenting on the significance of International Literacy Day, being celebrated across the world on Wednesday.

“The universities and institutions of higher education unfortunately have been reduced to schools and are recycling existing knowledge. Instead, the higher seats of learning need to come up with new ideas and challenge the existing knowledge, so vital to contribute meaningfully towards development of the society,” he said. Universities should be “an intellectual arm” of the Government and should promote independent thinking to approach myriad challenges to the country.

International Literacy Day, celebrated since 1976 by UNESCO (ILD) this year will focus on “Literacy for a human centered recovery: Narrowing the digital divide,” with a special emphasis on “the interaction and digital skills needed by non-literate kids and adults.”

The day is celebrated by UNESCO every year to remind the international community of the vital significance of literacy for the people, communities and societies. It brings into the spotlight the necessity to make further efforts to create a more literate society.

This year “It will also investigate what makes technology-enabled literacy learning accessible and meaningful in order to ensure that no one is left behind.
