Wheels:
Wheels enable easy movement of the bed, within the room. Movement of the bed is necessary in patient care.Wheels are lockable. For safety, wheels can be locked when transferring the patient in or out of the bed.
Elevation:
Beds can be raised and lowered at the head, feet, and their entire height. While on older beds this is done with cranks usually found at the foot of the bed, on modern beds this feature is electronic.
Today, while a fully electric bed has many features that are electronic, a semi-electric bed has two motors, one to raise the head, and the other to raise the foot.
Raising the head can provide some benefits to the patient, the staff, or both. This position is used for sitting the patient upright for feeding or certain other activities, or in some patients, can ease breathing, or may be beneficial to the patient for other reasons.This position is necessary for patients having bronchitis or asthma.Raising the head causes them easy to breathe.
Raising the feet can help ease movement of the patient toward the headboard and may also be necessary for certain conditions.By raising the feet up above the heart, it can make blood flow more natural and reduce the risk of overworking of veins. Relieving muscle tension: Tiredness and soreness in the lower body can be relieved by simply elevating the legs a few times a day.Elevating the legs may help prevent or ease vein conditions, such as:
Superficial thrombophlebitis. Superficial thrombophlebitis is a blood clot in a vein just under the skin that can cause swelling and tenderness.
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
Varicose veins.
Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).
Raising and lowering the height of the bed can help bring the bed to a comfortable level for the patient to get in and out of bed, or for caregivers to work with the patient.
Side rails:
Beds have side rails that can be raised or lowered. These rails, which serve as protection for the patient and sometimes can make the patient feel more secure, can also include the buttons used for their operation by staff and patients to move the bed, call the nurse, or even control the television.
There are many types of side rails to serve different purposes. While some are simply to prevent patient falls, others have equipment that can aid the patient themself without physically confining the patient to bed.
In some cases, use of the rails may require a physician order (depending on local laws and the policies of the facility where they are used) as rails may be considered a form of medical restraint.
The Benefits and Risks of Bed Rails
Aiding in turning and repositioning within the bed.
Providing a hand-hold for getting into or out of bed.
Providing a feeling of comfort and security.
Reducing the risk of patients falling out of bed when being transported.
Tilting:
Some advanced beds are equipped with columns which help tilt the bed to 15-30 degrees on each side. Such tilting can help prevent pressure ulcers for the patient, and help caregivers to do their daily tasks with less of a risk of back injuries.
Bed exit alarm:
Many modern hospital beds are able to feature a bed exit alarm whereby a pressure pad on or in the mattress arms an audible alert when a weight such as a patient is placed on it, and activating the full alarm once this weight is removed. This is helpful to hospital staff or caregivers monitoring any number of patients from a distance as the alarm will trigger in the event of a patient ,especially the elderly or memory impaired, falling out of the bed or wandering off unsupervised. This alarm can be emitted solely from the bed itself or connected to the nurse call bell.. Also some beds can feature a multi-zone bed exit alarm which can alert the staff when the patient starts moving in the bed and before the actual exit which is necessary for some cases. Bed-exit alarms alert caregivers that a patient who should not get out of bed unassisted is doing so. These alarms can help reduce the likelihood of falls and can promote speedy assistance to patients who have already fallen.
CPR function:
In the event of the bed occupant suddenly requiring cardiopulmonary resuscitation, some hospital beds offer a CPR function in the form of a button or lever which when activated flattens the bed platform and put it in lowest height and deflates and flattens the bed's air mattress creating a flat hard surface necessary for CPR administration.
Specialist beds:
Many specialist hospital beds are also produced to effectively treat different injuries. These include standing beds, turning beds and legacy beds. These are usually used to treat back and spinal injuries as well as severe trauma.
They may help a variety of medical complaints and exponentially increase comfort. Many medical conditions can actually be worsened by poor sleep quality and uncomfortable sleeping positions.

Electric beds are useful for patients having poor mobility, swelling complaints, arthritis, chronic pain, respiratory conditions, acid reflux & heartburn.

Electric beds allow patients to control their sleeping position .Not only do they help them in sitting up or lying down, they provide additional support while they sit up in bed.If patients are bed-bound this can make an amazing difference to the quality of their everyday life. While bed bound, the optional massage function can also aid patient’s circulation, which in turn helps in preventing bed sore.Attendants sometimes face problems in moving patients with high weight ,electric beds can help them to make their tasks easier.
People have swelling in joints :
People who suffer from swelling complaints, such as edema, can relieve the pressure and pain by elevating their affected limbs. With edema, body fluids tend to pool in the lower part of the limbs – generally the feet, ankles and lower legs. By raising limbs above heart level, the pressure in this part of the body is released and circulation is improved. Electric beds help by keeping affected limbs raised throughout the night, or for as long as you need relief
This is a far more consistent method than placing pillows beneath limbs. You do not need to constantly make adjustments or worry about losing your support during the night.
People having arthritis:
Patients having arthritis have inflammation in their joints. Electric beds help them in massaging their limbs and decreasing inflammation. Many electric beds come with therapeutic massage controls built into the mattress or available as an additional feature. These massage controls are managed by remote control and help to gently relieve the aches of sore muscles and joints.
People suffering from chronic pain:
Electric Beds can help people with chronic pains in various ways. They help by easing in and out of bed every day. Jerky movements such as sitting up quickly can inflame pain.Electrically adjustable beds also help by providing a range of positions to sleep in, depending on your ailment. Each time you elevate your back or legs, you are realigning your vertebrae and adjusting the pressure they place on your nerves and muscles.
For example, if the lower back is sore, it is recommended that you elevate legs, creating a pelvic tilt which can relieve strain on the affected muscles. If the upper back is sore, it helps to raise and support the torso.
People with respiratory conditions:
Sleeping in an elevated position can help increase oxygen flow during sleep, alleviating breathing disorders such as asthma. Sleeping in a horizontal position can increase airway resistance as gravity affects throat tissues and causes secretions to accumulate.
Tongues can also loll back and block the airway. During sleeping in a raised position, not only does tongue stay in place, but fluids are also drained from the lungs, preventing congestion.
People with allergies or a head cold may also find this particularly helpful. Sleeping in a slightly more upright position has the additional benefit of decreasing snoring, as snoring often occurs due to blocked airways.
People with acid reflux & heartburn:
Doctors often recommend elevating the upper body to alleviate the symptoms of acid reflux.As those with acid reflux may have damage to their lower esophageal sphincter (stomach valve), by lying flat, the acid can move the esophagus. This is what causes and exacerbates heartburn and acid reflux. Raising the torso 6 to 8 inches higher aids the stomach in retaining its acid.
Oxygen concentrator
What is an oxygen concentrator and how does it work?
COVID-19 is a respiratory illness. It not only infects the respiratory tract, but in severe COVID patients, it also takes a heavy toll on their oxygen saturation levels. With oxygen deprivation and increasing lung infections in COVID patients, oxygen concentrators and cylinders are highly valuable.
The air around us consists of about 78% of nitrogen and 21% of oxygen, with other gasses making up the remaining 1%. Oxygen concentrators are devices that help
concentrate oxygen from the ambient air by removing nitrogen and delivering pure oxygen to individuals, whose blood oxygen levels (SpO2) readings drop below 93%. Ideal oxygen levels should be between 94-99%.An oxygen concentrator makes 5 liters of oxygen in one hour which means it makes 120 liters of oxygen in 24 hours.On the other hand an oxygen cylinder contains 5 liters of oxygen costs 2000,hence use of an oxygen concentrator can save upto 55000 rupees as compared to an oxygen cylinder.
Different types of oxygen concentrators:
Two types of oxygen concentrators namely continuous flow and pulse dose are available to us in the market. While a continuous flow oxygen concentrator provides the same flow of oxygen in a minute until its been turned off, pulse dose identifies the patient's breathing pattern and gives out oxygen when it detects inhalation. Therefore,the oxygen dispensed by pulse units cannot be measured the same as continuous flow oxygen concentrators, as they do not produce constant oxygen for one minute.
When can it be used and for whom?
Besides COVID-19 , oxygen therapy may be used for various reasons.In terms of COVID-19 patients. People whose blood oxygen levels drop below 93%, they can start arranging oxygen concentrators for themselves and can start therapy at home. However, it is important to note that only patients with mild or moderate symptoms, who have an oxygen saturation level between 90-94, should depend on an oxygen concentrator and can use it at home. Anyone whose SpO2 level drops below 80-85, they may need higher flow of oxygen or may have to resort to an oxygen level.
ECG monitor
What is an ECG monitor: An electrocardiogram records the electrical signals in the heart. It is a common and painless test used to quickly detect heart problems and monitor heart's health.Electrocardiograms also called ECGs or EKGs. ECG machines are standard equipment in operating rooms and ambulances. Some personal devices, such as smart watches, offer ECG monitoring.
Benefits of personal ECG monitor:
A personal ECG monitor (electrocardiogram or EKG) offers many benefits , the traditional 12-lead ECG machine. The home ECG portable monitor is handheld, simple-to-use, convenient, and low cost. The cardiac monitoring can occur any time at home and measurements are available and recorded within minutes. The portable EKG machine is light and compact. Using it is simpler than taking one's blood pressure.Cardiac events can occur irregularly and not during the doctor's office. By doing home ecg monitoring, the condition can be captured and saved to be analyzed by a doctor at a later time. The best time to take a reading is when you are not feeling well and experienced some warning signs of heart attack.
When a patient is not feeling well, the patient and family can immediately take a reading using an ecg monitoring device, assess the situation and take appropriate actions. Without the information, the patient may be reluctant to seek medical help and wait for a few more hours to see if he gets better. One should immediately seek help if the measurement is significantly different from the norm.
The EKG machine is an essential tool in sleep apnea study. Research has shown that obstructive sleep apnea alters healthy heart rate dynamics. During periods of prolonged obstructive sleep apnea, the heart rate typically shows cyclic fluctuation associated with the apneic phase and the resumption of breathing. Many entries were submitted with outstanding results. ECG monitor is a standard tool in the diagnosis of sleep apnea.
Handheld EKG monitoring can reduce the chance of having a false heart attack, which can cause tons of stress and anxiety, and in turn may trigger a real heart attack. This "heart attack experience" had made the author build a home-made heart monitoring system.
Proper interpretation of EKG would require extensive training. However a patient should be able to tell if he is feeling well and if there are any changes to the waveform.
A home ECG monitor is an alternative to a Holter monitor. A Holter monitor is a machine for recording the heart's rhythms. The monitor has multiple leads and is usually worn for 24 - 48 hours during normal activity. It can detect cardiac episodes that occur daily. For tracking infrequent cardiac events, a Holter monitor is not sufficient. Furthermore, wearing the machine is not comfortable.
A patient can use the EKG portable monitor to gauge the effects of changes in medicine and his progress.
ECG personal monitor is well suitable for nursing homes and home care providers to monitor their patients' conditions and progress. Since inexpensive and quality portable ECG monitors are available and little training is required to take measurements, the service can be made commonly available to patients. With some training, personnel in healthcare centers can learn to identify abnormal readings and in case of emergency, the data can be related to a doctor or hospital immediately.
The handheld ECG monitor can also be used at the doctor's office as part of the regular routine. Taking a measurement is fast and easy.
