👁️ What is Conjunctivitis?
It’s an inflammation of the conjunctiva—the thin, clear layer covering the white of your eye and inner eyelids. During monsoon, it spreads rapidly due to increased humidity and poor hygiene.

⚠️ Symptoms to Watch For:
🔹 Red or pink eyes
🔹 Watery or sticky discharge
🔹 Itching or burning sensation
🔹 Gritty feeling (like sand in the eye)
🔹 Crusting on eyelids, especially after sleep

Glaucoma is a disease that gradually damages the optic nerve and can lead to vision loss or blindness. Typically, it’s treated by lowering eye pressure through drops, laser, or surgery, but these treatments don’t always work well for everyone. Scientists have long suspected that homocysteine, a natural substance in the body, might play a role in glaucoma, but new research shows that homocysteine is actually just a bystander, not a cause of the disease.

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet studied rats with glaucoma and found that raising their homocysteine levels didn’t make the disease worse. They also found no link between homocysteine levels and disease progression in people. Instead, they discovered that glaucoma disrupts how the retina uses certain vitamins, slowing down its metabolism. This led them to test whether supplementing vitamins B6, B9, B12, and choline could protect the optic nerve.

In animal tests, the vitamin mix stopped optic nerve damage in mice with slower-progressing glaucoma and slowed it in rats with more aggressive disease—all without lowering eye pressure. This suggests these vitamins work differently from traditional treatments..

A wrong intramuscular (IM) injection can, in rare but serious cases, lead to paralysis or nerve damage. Here's a breakdown of how this can happen:

1. Nerve Injury

Injecting into or too close to a major nerve — particularly:

Sciatic nerve in the buttock (gluteal region)

Radial nerve in the deltoid region

Femoral or lateral femoral cutaneous nerves in the thigh

Result: Immediate sharp pain, weakness, numbness, or even long-term paralysis in the affected area.

2. Incorrect Site Selection

Using the wrong site (e.g., upper inner quadrant of the gluteal area instead of the upper outer quadrant) increases the risk of hitting a nerve.

3. Improper Technique

Poor technique can cause:

Deep tissue damage

Nerve impingement

Injection too close to bones or blood vessels

4. Toxicity of the Drug

Some medications are not safe if they come in contact with nerve tissue. For example:

Certain antibiotics (e.g., penicillin G)

Irritating substances or oil-based medications

If injected too close to a nerve, they can cause inflammation, demyelination, or necrosis of nerve tissue.

5. Compartment Syndrome or Vascular Compromise

If the injection leads to:

Hematoma

Swelling that compresses nearby nerves

Blocked blood flow to nerves

It can result in temporary or permanent loss of function.

Signs of Injection-Related Nerve Injury:

Burning or shooting pain during injection

Weakness or inability to move the limb

Numbness or tingling

Muscle atrophy (in long-term cases)

What to Do If This Happens:

Immediate medical attention — time is critical.

Neurological evaluation

Imaging (MRI, EMG) to assess nerve damage

Pain management

Physical therapy

Surgery — in severe cases (e.g., nerve repair)

ACUTE DACRYOCYSTITIS
It is the acute suppurative inflammation of the lacrimal sac.

ETIOLOGY
It usually occurs as an acute exacerbation of the chronic dacryocystitis. It may start spontaneously.
It is caused by pyogenic pathogens such as Pneumococcus, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, etc.

SYMPTOMS
1. There is marked swelling, redness and tenderness of the skin over the sac and adjacent area.
2. No regurgitation is present as the canaliculi are blocked due to oedema.
3. Conjunctival congestion and submaxillary lymph node enlargement may be present.
4. Fluctuation is present on palpation over the sac area when there is abscess formation.
5. Lacrimal fistula may be present if the abscess bursts open repeatedly.

COMPLICATION
1. Osteomyelitis of the lacrimal bone may occur.
2. Orbital cellulitis is a dangerous complication.
3. Cavernous sinus thrombosis is a very serious condition.

TREATMENT
1. Hot compresses, systemic antibiotics, analgesics and anti-inflammatory are effective.
2. In case of lacrimal abscess, a vertical incision is given over the sac area in the lower part tofacilitate the drainage by gravity.
3. In case of lacrimal fistula, excision of the fistulous tract and removal of sac is done.

∆ HZO
Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus (HZO) is a viral infection caused by the reactivation of varicella-zoster virus in the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve. It affects the eye and surrounding skin.

Symptoms
1. *Pain*: Severe pain in the forehead, eye, or face.
2. *Rash*: A painful rash or blisters on the forehead, eyelids, or nose.
3. *Eye involvement*: Redness, swelling, and inflammation of the eye.
4. *Vision problems*: Blurred vision, double vision, or sensitivity to light.

Complications
1. *Keratitis*: Inflammation of the cornea.
2. *Uveitis*: Inflammation of the uvea.
3. *Glaucoma*: Increased intraocular pressure.
4. *Postherpetic neuralgia*: Persistent pain after the rash has resolved.

Treatment
1. *Antiviral medications*: Such as acyclovir, valacyclovir, or famciclovir.
2. *Pain management*: Medications to manage pain and discomfort.
3. *Eye care*: Lubricating eye drops and other measures to protect the eye.

Prevention
1. *Vaccination*: The shingles vaccine can help prevent HZO.
2. *Prompt treatment*: Early treatment can help reduce the risk of complications.

HZO can lead to significant morbidity, and prompt recognition and treatment are essential to prevent long-term complications.
