In the early hours of a crisp morning, a child from a remote area near the city was rushed at SICHN Sukkur. The child had been pulled from the water after a drowning incident and was now in critical condition. His breathing was labored, and his small chest struggled with each breath, showing signs of respiratory distress. His skin, pale and clammy, indicated poor perfusion, a sign that his body was not getting enough oxygen.

The medical team sprang into action. Dr. Feroz and Dr. Salwa, both highly skilled pediatric intensivists, were quickly called to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). On listening to the child’s chest, they noted a decreased air entry on the right side, suggesting a possible collapse or fluid in the lung. The urgency of the situation was clear. Chest x ray was performed which shows moderate pleural effusion

Without wasting a moment, the doctors decided to perform an emergency intervention. They prepared to insert a chest tube to drain any fluid that might be compressing the lungs and compromising the child's breathing. With precision and care, Dr. Feroz and Dr. Salwa passed the chest tube. As the tube was placed, the tension in the room began to ease. Gradually, the child's breathing became less labored. The once-panicked expressions of the medical staff softened as they saw signs of improvement.

With the chest tube successfully in place, the child’s condition stabilized. On just 1 liter of oxygen, his oxygen saturation levels began to climb back to normal. The color slowly returned to his cheeks, and his vital signs showed steady improvement.

The staff at the SICHN SUKKUR remained vigilant, closely monitoring the child’s progress throughout the day. Thanks to the swift and decisive actions of the team at SICHN Sukkur, the child was on the path to recovery. It was anticipated that, with continued care, he would be discharged in just a couple of days, ready to return to his home, far away in the remote areas from which he had come.
