Explained well by Dr Raja Adnan Ahmed

Is the UK still worth it?

In recent few months, I have been getting an increasing number of messages from IMG junior doctors asking me if the UK is still worth it as they have been reading negative things on social media.

If the UK is the right choice for you depends on a lot of factors which include personal and personal goals.

But among all the negativity, we also have to simplify facts and present them to the next generation who are looking for guidance. Here are the most common questions I get.

Q: Is the NHS short of doctors and actively hiring the IMGs?
A: Yes

Q: Are the salaries and working hours still better in comparison to developing countries like Pakistan?
A: Yes

Q: Is the UK treating both local graduates and IMGs the same and basing recruitment on merit?
A: Yes

Q: Are UK Qualifications well recognised in other parts of the world and along with UK experience you get better deals in countries like the Middle East, Australia & Canada?
A: Yes

Q: Are the IMGs able to get training in all specialities including the ones considered harder due to competition ratios like Radiology and Surgery?
A: Yes

Q: Will I and my dependents will get British Passports after 5-6 years of working in the UK?
A: Yes

Q: After CCT and the British passport, if I like to work in the private sector in the UK, is there scope:
A: Yes, the private sector is growing and recruiting.

Q: Do the senior doctors have to rely on the NHS salary or do they have options to supplement income from other sources?
A: Yes, plenty of options to supplement income.

Q: Are the healthcare and school education for children free for the IMG doctors who come to the UK?
A: Yes

Q: Will I be accepted by the NHS as an IMG and British society:
A: British society is very multicultural and NHS is filled with IMG staff and Doctors.

Q: Can I buy a house in the UK while I am on the visa?
A: Yes

Best Wishes

Some people have been asking me for study materials. Let me tell you that there are bundles of materials available on multiple social media platforms but all of them are not comparable with the difficulty level of real OET. Some of those materials are too easy while others are more difficult than the real exam. I've tried to arrange materials in order of importance and comparability with the real exam. Links for the most concised and precise materials are given on page 07 of our OET Guide 2nd edition pdf file, I advise that those materials should be downloaded and practiced following the order I've mentioned in my pdf file.

The most commonly encountered cases in our medical unit have been written and it's tried to write it according to the recent guidelines. However, some of our colleagues had been waiting for it for the previous 2 weeks as I had told them that I'm working to make a concised guide based on my personal experiences with the patient's I encounter usually in medical emergencies and OPDs ; therefore, due to shortage of time, all files are not according to the guidelines. I'm working on it to make it available soon according to the latest guidelines and it'll be updated with time inshallah.

For the time being, if anyone need it, it can be easily downloaded from my googledrive using the following link.

We will now publish results for the May 2022 test on Saturday 9 July 2022 at 10am (BST), rather than on 7 July. We’ll email candidates next week with more information about how to access your results.

GMC Online may be busy on the day and you may need to wait to enter our site. If you do, you’ll be given a wait time and instructions about what to do.

We also want to assure you that there will be enough PLAB 2 places to book for everyone who passes PLAB 1.

Our website has more information about PLAB 1 results: https://www.gmc-uk.org/registration-and-licensing/join-the-register/plab/plab-1-guide/your-results. If your query isn’t answered here, please email [email protected].

PLAB 1 update: our revised plans for releasing places for 2023.

We appreciate your patience as we’ve explored improvements to our booking system, following the technical issues that meant we had to pause our March release of PLAB 1 places. We apologise again for the stress and inconvenience this caused.

On Saturday 25 June 2022 at 10.30 am (BST) we’ll release PLAB 1 places for the following dates across all locations:

- 16 February 2023
- 25 May 2023
- 10 August 2023

Our PLAB 1 webpage has information about what you’ll need to do before you can book your place. https://orlo.uk/XVzAq

There’ll be enough places on these dates for everyone who is currently eligible. Although we can’t guarantee that individual preferences will be met, we’ve worked with suppliers to increase the number of places we can offer in the most popular locations.

We’ve also extended the validity period for English language evidence for candidates affected by the delay to our release, to make sure they are able to secure a place on one of the available dates.

Please note that we’re unable to help with queries about individual circumstances via social media. For any questions, we encourage you to first visit our PLAB webpage above before contacting us.

Thank you for your continued patience and commitment to practising medicine in the UK.

PLAB 1

PLAB 1 update:
Due to technical issues, we’ve stopped today’s PLAB 1 releases. We’re extremely sorry for the inconvenience and stress this has caused candidates wishing to book their place in February 2023.

We know how much time and planning goes into the whole process so candidates will be given at least two weeks’ notice of the new release date.

A very small number of candidates were able to book their test today before the issues arose, but we want to assure others that there will be seats available across all the locations we offer when we reopen bookings. Further PLAB 1 dates for 2023 will be released as per our schedule which you can find at: https://orlo.uk/UCc31

We’d again like to offer our apologies for the issues experienced today and appreciate your patience while we work to fix these issues. We’re grateful to candidates from around the world for their commitment to practising in the UK.

𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗗𝗼𝗿𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀!

Keep in mind the following few important points.

Firstly, This specific post in the plab group is basically for those undergraduate/freshly graduate students who'll / who've applied for FY1 . While most of our Pakistani students have already completed their FY1 (House Job) by the time they go to UK after GMC registration. Therefore, it'll not affect us too much.

Secondly, at one occasion in this post, it was mentioned that this problem created because Foundation year program was over-subscribed this time. So the students have to compete for those posts in the NHS. On the other hand, the chair person of the Royal College of GPs said that He needs to go to the bottom of this matter to understand the cause of this problem. It means that there is still no valid reason for them to deny applications from people applying for FY1.

𝐌𝐘 𝐒𝐔𝐆𝐆𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒;

Try to work on your CV and make it as strong as you can. This will enable you to achieve your goal easily. If you've more skills and knowledge as compared to your competitors applying for the same post, you'll be prioritised. I'll suggest that one should also clear Royal Colleges exams like MRCP, MRCOG, MRCS, MRCPCH and MRCR/FRCR etc before going to UK and applying for NHS job. These exams will definitely make you more eligible for a post in the NHS.
