Leprosy Elimination:
The following services are included in the elimination programme:
• Chemotherapy – all new patients on regular treatment.
• Prevention and Treatment of Deformity.
• Examination of Patient’s contact for early case detection and treatment.
• Social and Economical Rehabilitation of patients and their families.
• Health Education, Awareness and Community empowerment. Treatment of Tuberculosis:
MALC is also supporting the Government in the National TB Control Programme and providing these services through its Leprosy centres in the entire country.
• DOTS supervision in remote and difficult to reach areas.
• Defaulter tracing and analysis of defaulting.
• Contact screening for early case finding and stopping the transmission of infection.
• Proper follow up of TB patients.
• Supervised therapy for prevention of MDR (Drug Resistant TB).
• Social help to needy patients (Nutritional support).
• Health Education to patients and their families – at community level. Control of Blindness:
The services include:
• Diagnosis and treatment of cataract.
• Diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma, trachoma and other eye diseases.
• Refractive errors.
• Screening of school children for Vitamin-A deficiency, Trachoma and refractive errors.
• Surgical camps in remote areas of Balochistan.
• Awareness and Health Education to patients, families and community. Community Development:
MALC supports the community to seek ways and means to bring a visible improvement in the standard of living. MALC has contributed to Pakistan’s progress by having organized various community development projects in the areas of education, women’s development, justice and child development. The Social Services Department also provides:
• Regular social help to deformed patients.
• Housing help to deserving patients.
• Economical help to patients and their children.
• Help in medical emergencies to needy patients.
• Education help to patients and their children. Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR):
The CBR programme follows from Leprosy disability to general disability. Presently, 1000+ patients have reported to MALC and its sub-centres all over Pakistan. House visits are the preferred mode of treatment, teaching family members the required exercises and precautions. 15-20% of the population is in need of rehabilitation, due to physical or mental impairment. Disaster Response:
MALC has established a cell for disaster management which consists of a well-trained team capable of addressing the needs of any disaster. First Phase: Relief—provision of medicines, temporary shelters, food and water, and other emergency necessities. Second Phase: Rehabilitation—provision of improved shelters, water and sanitation facilities, medical aid and various other interventions. Training:
Over the last 45+ years, the National Training Institute has conducted basic and advanced Leprosy technician training courses for the paramedical workers of Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Since 1996, the department has sensed the need to diversify its activities by arranging Ophthalmic courses through networking with other reputed training institutes of the country. All such efforts are continuously made to ensure a skilled and knowledgeable workforce at operational level, ready to meet the new health challenges while continuing Leprosy surveillance for next few decades.Till date, the National Training Institute has trained over 550 Leprosy Technicians.
