Lower back pain, or lumbago, is a very common, often non-specific, condition causing pain between the lower ribs and buttocks, usually caused by muscle strains, ligament injuries, or improper lifting. It is commonly managed through staying active, applying heat/cold packs, and over-the-counter anti-inflammatories.
Common Causes and Risk Factors
Mechanical Injuries (97% of cases): Strained muscles or ligaments from heavy lifting, sudden movement, or poor posture.
Structural Issues: Herniated/slipped discs, spinal stenosis (narrowing), arthritis, and sciatica (nerve pain).
Risk Factors: Physical inactivity, smoking, obesity, and high-stress work.
Symptoms
Dull, aching, or sharp, burning pain in the lower back.
Pain that radiates down the legs (sciatica).
Muscle spasms or stiffness.
Treatment and Management
Self-Care: Staying active (avoiding bed rest), using hot or cold packs, and maintaining good posture.
Therapies: Physical therapy, exercises to strengthen the core.
