SoftEnglish welcomes the ambition shown by the UK Government in its new schools white paper Every Child Achieving and Thriving (23 February 2026).

This is a bold step forward for SEND in England — reshaping how support is delivered, how plans are issued, how funding is used, and how mainstream schools become truly inclusive environments where every learner can flourish.

We’re encouraged to see a system-wide commitment to earlier intervention, clearer pathways for families, and stronger accountability across education services. Real change happens when policy meets practice — and this framework creates the conditions for both.

At SoftEnglish, we believe positive reform like this helps unlock potential, strengthens confidence, and ensures no child’s needs are overlooked. We look forward to supporting schools and families as these changes take shape

Some reading mistakes are auditory.
Meaning that before you can read a sound, you need to hear the difference between sounds. Think:
• /b/ vs /vp/
• /s/ vs /th/
• lake vs like

For dyslexic and ESOL learners, these contrasts are often blurred. And when sounds are unclear, letters become guesswork.
That’s why our approach doesn’t jump straight to words. Our books trains the ear first by clearing sound contrasts, repeated listening and decoding + spelling together

We use lots of phonetic dictations: you write what you hear. Later when you learn the patterns we also have pattern implementation dictations.

This sample page from our book for example, works on sound precision, not memorization.

The full approach is explained in the book "Advanced Softread" - you can find it on Amazon here: https://amzn.to/40pvMLm

Reading English relies on several brain skills. One of them is:

Visual Discrimination - Some reading mistakes are visual.
b / d, p / q, was / saw

For many dyslexic learners, these errors are signs that the brain is still learning how to visually distinguish written symbols. If the visual system is overloaded, decoding collapses.

That’s why SoftRead reduces visual noise with clean layouts, consistent fonts and repeated visual patterns

The page you see here is from our book, designed to train visual discrimination, so the brain can finally say: “I know this letter. I can trust it.”

If you work with dyslexic learners, or live with one, you’ve probably seen them trying so hard, practicing endlessly yet not reaching fluency…

The problem isn’t effort. It’s that one of the brain skills required for reading was never fully developed.

Reading English relies on several brain skills, such as:
• seeing differences between letters
• hearing differences between sounds
• breaking words into parts
• blending them back together
• slowing down instead of guessing

In the next posts, we will learn about these skills, why they matter — using real pages from our book.

Explain the “why” behind the rule.
Dyslexic learners often push back against rules—especially if they don’t make sense. Instead of insisting on grammar structures or spelling patterns, show them the logic.
Why is “c” sometimes soft and sometimes hard? Why is “gh” silent? When they understand the reasoning, the resistance fades, and the rule sticks. Logic helps them own the learning.

Every teacher or parent has that one word their student just can’t seem to read, no matter how many times it appears.
They freeze… they guess… they get frustrated… and so do you.

Very often, it’s not the word itself, but the fact that the student is relying on global reading — trying to capture the word as a single visual picture instead of decoding it and breaking it down into its logical patterns and sounds.

Do you have a problematic word?
How have you tried to work through it?

Myth!
Dyslexia is a neurobiological condition and has nothing to do with intelligence, but with the way the brain processes language.
In fact, many individuals with dyslexia have average or even above-average intelligence, including Albert Einstein himself.

Great minds such as Leonardo da Vinci and Steven Spielberg faced challenges with reading and writing, yet dyslexia never prevented them from achieving greatness.

Real progress happens when we stop asking dyslexic learners to “try harder” and instead give them the right tools, structured, multisensory decoding skills that help the brain approach text in a more organized way.
