Love the warm textures in the by coming through. This has been my idle background project for a year. Does everyone always keep a background project for when you need to pass time for a bit?

Loving my breezy which has taken me through every Portugal activity - sunset walks to skateparks. The feed sack material is super breezy and keeps off the sun! It’s the first vacation where I’ve brought so many me mades and I’m so proud. More details about this wonderful top by in a previous post.

The ever popular lives up to its hype. These days I’m wearing it more like a pool coverup but I’ve gone skating in this as well and the breeze is great. Cut size M. Modifications was a short skirt, crossing over the front by an additional 1.5”, and pulling the tips of the front bodice triangles down by around 1” to more securely tighten down the neckline. Next time I sew this I’ll slim down the body a little more, shorten the bodice by 1.5”, and do a super short and flared skirt to get something a little silly and babylike. Pardon the messy sewing room!

Fabric: thrifted west elm bedsheet, cotton

Almost done - but I don’t know what to do about the bottom of the skirt hem. Right now it’s just overcasted, but I can’t decide if I want to add a flounce, leave it plain with a blind hem, something else...luckily I have a few days to think because I ran out of thread!

Smiling here but it’s been a tough week. I don’t know what to say in the small space Instagram offers, except to put out there that so many of the Asian femmes I know have struggled with how society hypersexualizes and devalues us. It’s comforting to be seen and messed up that so many of us have had the same experiences of violence. I wore sunglasses when I waited at a small town Texas clinic to get my vaccine because I was afraid of someone targeting me. I’m anxious for my parents if they go to Chinatown to shop. I’m scared for my friends who work at places like the ones that were targeted. I hope for a day where true equity is here and we all don’t have to be afraid. Grateful for others in the maker community who have spoken out.

Top is in size 14 except for size 12 in the waist. For my final dress I’ll do size 12 with 10 in the waist, as this pattern seems oversized.

My by done! Used Fino yarn, around 1100 yards for a RTW medium proportion. Still need to block it and I think the balloon sleeves will really pop after that. I went off the book on the pattern in a few ways, most obviously in the color work section on the bottom of the body. It’s a fantastic pattern with great fit notes so I highly recommend. What I don’t recommend is what I did, which was adding short row shaping for the chest above the gray geometric line. This actually subtly distorts the pattern when worn. It’s not too obvious when I put it on, but only because I did a few short rows and because of the angle of my shoulders. I think if you’re gonna add shaping, probably best to keep it confined to decreasing off the waist (which I also did, and liked).

Loving the color work on the so far! added short row shaping for the bust on this one but am regretting it as it does something odd to the balance of that gray line in the back vs the front. Hoping it’ll block out mostly normal as I’m expecting this to grow a little and loosen up.

Cant decide what matching top I should make to pair with my first pants. The Tudor blouse looks cute...any ideas? Pattern is by , only mod was not adding elastic to the front and only having it in the back, and cutting it higher to achieve mid calf as I’m short.

What about second snow in Texas?
All the dog coats here had sold out or had massive shipping delays so I whipped up this dog coat (details below) in one day for my pup. Sewing has been a fun little hobby in lockdown but brought a new mood when I made this, rushing against the big freeze, no big deal in other places but unexpected here. I was so grateful to have a skill I could use to protect this little loved one. It gave me a new, functional appreciation of this hobby that I’ve regarded mostly aesthetically up to now. It reminds me of the early days of the pandemic, when I hand sewed masks for us. A whole different mood.
Like I said, Texas is unprepared for this severe weather. We’re being asked across the state to reduce our power consumption to help save the power grid. I also ask that if you are able, to donate to shelters where you are, many of whom are doing blanket drives. This may be a charming sight for us or a mild inconvenience but it’s also life threatening to so many who weren’t expecting to have to prepare for this in Texas. Let’s help protect our fellow humans!
Pattern: by (it’s free!) and worn over a wrap
Fabric: light cotton canvas from Joanns and an old sweatshirt for batting
