They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but that is not a sentiment shared by William Hogarth.
The painter was an outspoken critic of artistic piracy in the 18th century, and it has now been revealed he may have painted over his works to thwart the plagiarists who dogged his career.
X-rays and infrared scans of Hogarth’s best-known works, A Rake’s Progress, show he changed some of the eight paintings in the series after completion, when knock-off prints started appearing before he had published his own.
