When I was growing up, we had our own hens in the backyard. They roamed freely, pecked around in the dirt, basked in the sun â and gave us fresh eggs daily.
Back then, I never questioned the quality of an egg. An egg was an egg, right?
Years later, after moving to London, I noticed these strange little numbers printed on eggs at the supermarket. I had no clue what they meant â honestly, I thought it was just the farm's postcode or something! đ
But eventually, I learned the truth. And it changed the way I look at eggs entirely.
Here's what those numbers mean:
đ„ đ = đđ«đ đđ§đąđ
These hens are raised outdoors, have space to move, see natural sunlight, and are fed organic, non-GMO food. They donât get routine antibiotics or hormone-disrupting chemicals.
đ„ đ = đ
đ«đđ đđđ§đ đ
Better than caged, but still limited space. They might step outside, but their diet and environment are often far from natural.
đ„ đ = đđđ«đ§
No cages, but also no access to the outdoors. They live indoors under artificial light, often overcrowded and fed processed feed.
đ„ đ = đđđ đđ (đđđđđđ«đČ)
Minimal space, no sunlight, fed the cheapest grains (often GMO corn/soy), and may be given medications, hormones, and antibiotics.
So⊠đđ«đ đđ đ đŹ đ đšđšđ đđšđ« đđđłđđŠđ đšđ« đ§đšđ?
The short answer is: đȘđ” đ„đŠđ±đŠđŻđ„đŽ.
Eggs can be a wonderful source of protein, healthy fats, and nutrients. But the quality of that egg â and how the hen lived â deeply impacts its nutritional value and its inflammatory potential.
âïž đđđŹđđźđ«đ-đ«đđąđŹđđ, organic eggs from hens fed a varied, natural diet = better protein quality, better fat profile (including omega-3s), more nutrients like choline and vitamin D, and lower risk of hormone disruption. The yolk is often darker and richer â a sign of better nutrition.
âïž đ
đđđđšđ«đČ-đđđ«đŠđđ đđ đ đŹ, on the other hand, can contain residues from medications, have lower-quality protein, and may contribute to inflammation â especially if your child is sensitive or already dealing with eczema.
đ So no, not all eggs are healthy â and not all are equal when it comes to supporting healing.
đđźđđŹđđąđšđ§ đđšđ« đČđšđź:
Have you ever noticed a difference in how your child reacts to different types of eggs? Or did you ever pay attention to those tiny numbers before?
Iâd love to hear your thoughts. đŁ
