After Carl Zeiss died, Ernst Abbe established the foundation named after his friend and company founder in 1889. It became the sole owner of the "Optical Workshop" (today's ZEISS) and subsequently of the Jenaer Glaswerk (Jena Glassworks), which is now SCHOTT. Abbe stipulated how the companies were to be managed and how their profits should be used. He laid the groundwork for both companies’ commitment to social responsibility.
