Sjukvården tycks bli årets svenska valfråga. Motiverat! Ju mer skattebetalarna sätter in desto längre blir vårdköerna. I storstäderna tycks det nu ta en månad att få träffa husläkaren (skämtartikeln "vårdgarantin" talar om sju dagars väntan...). Härliga tider för hyrläkare och nätdoktorer när riksdag och landsting famlar i blindo.

A new Gates Foundation comparison of almost 200 national health care systems confirms the HCP Euro Health Consumer Index findings: Little Iceland and Switzerland among the overall top, with Sweden one of the leaders in disease treatment outcomes. Let´s say it again: if Sweden would address the abyssmal waiting and poor service attitude weaknesses the blue-yellow banner would be in the absolute top of the global healthcare flagpole!

Please read below a new comparison between leading national healthcare systems and what the US can learn from them. There are similarities with our Euro Health Consumer Index, such as pointing to NL as one of the best systems and UK outcomes as among the worst. But I´d say that highligting UK overall - even suggesting that NHS access is superior - the Commonwealth Fund reveals a political agenda: favouritism re. tax-funded , politically guided systems without co-payment.

That´s a pity, as CF often publishes relevant studies, trying to merge international examples with US (often chaotic) practice. And anyone who can make practical comparisons between NHS and French healthcare starts laughing if you claim that UK access would be superior to France...

July 18-19 HCP expert advisory teams gather in Milan to update indicators of the Euro Health Consumer Index as well as monitoring the development of the Euro Heart Index. On the table is also a geographical expansion of the indices. All together this process will further increase the relevance of the HCP assessment of national health system performance.

Ireland together with Sweden show the poorest access outcomes, says the annual review of healthcare systems performance among 35 countries. Ireland now promises to take action, says minister of health.

The HSE has said the number of people waiting in excess of four months for out-patient assessment and in-patient treatment, are unacceptably and unsustainably high.

"The European Parliament’s AGRI committee rejected the Commission’s proposal to let member states decide whether or not to restrict or prohibit the use of GM food and feed products in their territory on Thursday. “The Commission’s approach is completely unrealistic,” German MEP Albert Dess of the European People’s Party and the rapporteur of the opinion, told POLITICO. “If we allowed this, then the entire animal food production in the EU would be at stake, which could make us much more dependent on food imports from third countries that do not necessarily respect our high production standards. And we certainly want to avoid this.”

Regelbundet hör vi hur Sveriges Kommuner och Landsting (SKL) meddelar att nu ska man ta itu med inhyrningen av sjukvårdspersonal, där kostnaderna stiger. Varje sådant slag i luften brukar åtföljas av den snöda verklighetens dementi; inhyrningen bara ökar och ökar. Kostnaderna tycks nu ligger på 3-4 mdr kr årligen.

Sverige har jämfört med omvärlden gott om läkare och sjuksköterskor (i relation till invånarantalet). Trots detta råder kronisk och accelererande brist. Fenomenet förklaras främst av landstingens inkompetenta personalpolitik och många sjukvårdsledningars brist på ledningsförmåga. Ska man jobba i en illa ledd, påfrestande och otacksam miljö ska man i alla fall ha rejält betalt, menar alltfler sköterskor och läkare. Ett sätt att slippa klantig ledning är att arbeta åt ett bemanningsföretag och kringå landstingsvårdens byråkrati. Och då blir det dyrt för skattebetalarna! Men skjut inte på pianisten för att kapellmästaren klantat till det!
