A recent randomised controlled trial found that manual therapy combined with exercise led to greater improvements in psychological outcomes than exercise alone for people with lumbar disc herniation.

🔹 Reduced anxiety and depression
🔹 Lower fear of movement (kinesiophobia)
🔹 Improvements in pain, pain catastrophising, and quality of life

Both groups improved, but only the manual therapy group showed significant reductions in anxiety and kinesiophobia, highlighting the potential added value of hands-on care alongside exercise.
