A moment of stillness taken in my garden back home in Brighton. During the warmer months it’s a great place for study, both medicinal and martial! The Buddha statue is a reminder of The Middle Way and the value of looking within. Broadly speaking, taking a middle way in matters of the mind, body and spirit is a brilliant way to approach health and wellness, and it’s really quite simple (which doesn’t always translate as easy!)

How’s everyone experiencing the Spring energy? I hope it’s been positive. For me it’s been felt as a creative surge in some artistic expressions held dormant. I hope they can bloom like this Crocus.

Acupuncture (and correspondingly Chinese Medicine) has a long and recorded history of over 2000 years. Woo woo or quack medicine it is most certainly not!

An axiom that has held deeper and deeper meaning to me as time has passed is that the goal of Chinese medical treatment is to move a mountain with a feather.

Being young, eager and inexperienced, I was always keen to make an impact. In doing that it’s possible I ignored this important principle, I wanted to fill the gaps and not create them. I might have had a theoretical concept of balance, but I was too intent on forcing it. Not very balanced right?

Time, further learning and some experience have given me pause to approach things a bit differently now, and I’m constantly humbled by the depth and insight of the medicine. In no way can one ever approach true mastery so I strive to always hold the beginner’s mind, or what is known in the Zen tradition as ‘Shoshin’.

According to the 24 solar fortnights, the beginning of winter in 2024 started on November the 7th.

The fundamental classic of Chinese Medicine states “the three months of winter denote securing and storing”. We are advised to not disturb the yang qi, to go to bed early and rise with the sun. Alongside this the importance of avoiding cold and seeking warmth is stressed as well as not sweating (excessively) so as to avoid the loss of qi.

To act against this is to not be in correspondence with the qi of winter and therefore harms the kidneys, the organ in correspondence with the water phase.

I learnt recently that the Finnish word “Ruska” is used to describe the colour of the leaves in the autumn. Is there something similar in Swedish? I took this photo a couple of weeks ago and by now most of the leaves have since fallen…

According to the 24 Solar Terms of the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar, the start of winter is fast approaching and this year begins on the 7th November.

According to Chinese Medicine, the last 18 days of each season are governed by the earth element. Accordingly now would be a perfect time to receive acupuncture treatment in order to strengthen the spleen and stomach (corresponding to the earth phase) and to harmonise with the upcoming change of season.

Chinese medicine (Acupuncture, Herbs, Tui Na etc) can be very useful in the management of complex chronic health conditions. It’s understanding of the body sees the body through a different lens and therein lies the beauty and art of the medicine, to see things the conventional bio medical approach doesn’t.

However as with western medicine, the crucial factor in the recovery of illness is time. One has to exercise patience during the healing process and be prepared for the peaks and troughs that it brings. It is unrealistic to believe that healing is a purely upward curve, as with any challenge in life there will be times where we lose momentum and feel like things are moving in the opposite direction. A good practitioner can help support you during these moments and help guide you on your healing journey. Both must have courage and fortitude to navigate the challenges it brings.

Autumn is a beautiful time of the year, but also one tinged with melancholy. According to the Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine the three months of Autumn “denote taking in and balance”.

Several lines are devoted to how one should conduct themselves during this time such as going to bed early and rising early. It is advised one should foster a sense of peacefulness and tranquility and avoid directing the mind to the outside.

In this way one is in “correspondence with the Qi of Autumn and it is the way to nourish gathering” Because the Autumn corresponds to the metal element/phase, opposing these actions will harm the Lung and bring illness in the Winter.

Spotted this in the Uppsala Botanical Gardens. Da Huang (Chinese Rhubarb). The root is used in Chinese Medicine as a strong purgative but also has blood moving effects. It doesn’t tend to get used in everyday practice because of its drastic qualities but under the right circumstances it can be a very powerful and useful herb.
