Tom graduated with a first class honours in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Middlesex University and received an award from the Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine for his studies. We aim to use the wisdom and experience of the past to benefit and maintain our health for the future.

Brighton practice update coming soon, in the meantime thought I’d share this pic of the garden. Now we’re well into the Spring according to the 24 Solar Terms you can see the bursting out of colour as Yang continues its ascension before reaching its Zenith at the summer solstice.

Amongst all the chaos in the world, being able to take small moments to appreciate the beauty of nature is a real blessing.

The Sweden chapter has come to an end, and the back to Brighton chapter is beginning. Thanks to the lovely folks for putting up with me over the last few years, they gave me a space to practice Chinese Medicine and for that I’m most grateful. A moment of stillness taken in my garden back home in Brighton. During the warmer months it’s a great place for study, both medicinal and martial! The Buddha statue is a reminder of The Middle Way and the value of looking within. Broadly speaking, taking a middle way in matters of the mind, body and spirit is a brilliant way to approach health and wellness, and it’s really quite simple (which doesn’t always translate as easy!)

Acupuncture (and correspondingly Chinese Medicine) has a long and recorded history of over 2000 years. Woo woo or quack medicine it is most certainly not!

An axiom that has held deeper and deeper meaning to me as time has passed is that the goal of Chinese medical treatment is to move a mountain with a feather.

Being young, eager and inexperienced, I was always keen to make an impact. In doing that it’s possible I ignored this important principle, I wanted to fill the gaps and not create them. I might have had a theoretical concept of balance, but I was too intent on forcing it. Not very balanced right?

Time, further learning and some experience have given me pause to approach things a bit differently now, and I’m constantly humbled by the depth and insight of the medicine. In no way can one ever approach true mastery so I strive to always hold the beginner’s mind, or what is known in the Zen tradition as ‘Shoshin’.

According to the 24 solar fortnights, the beginning of winter in 2024 started on November the 7th.

The fundamental classic of Chinese Medicine states “the three months of winter denote securing and storing”. We are advised to not disturb the yang qi, to go to bed early and rise with the sun. Alongside this the importance of avoiding cold and seeking warmth is stressed as well as not sweating (excessively) so as to avoid the loss of qi.

To act against this is to not be in correspondence with the qi of winter and therefore harms the kidneys, the organ in correspondence with the water phase.

I learnt recently that the Finnish word “Ruska” is used to describe the colour of the leaves in the autumn. Is there something similar in Swedish? I took this photo a couple of weeks ago and by now most of the leaves have since fallen…

According to the 24 Solar Terms of the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar, the start of winter is fast approaching and this year begins on the 7th November.

According to Chinese Medicine, the last 18 days of each season are governed by the earth element. Accordingly now would be a perfect time to receive acupuncture treatment in order to strengthen the spleen and stomach (corresponding to the earth phase) and to harmonise with the upcoming change of season.
