Teacher Huang spoke directly of his concerns regarding the state of Taijiquan transmission in modern society, particularly what being observed during his decades teaching.

As a teacher wanted to impart to all true seekers!

On the Modern Trend and the Crisis of Quality Transmission

1. The Illusion of Quick Rewards

想练就练,收效果又方便,付出最少时间却能收运动量最丰。

"To practice whenever one feels like it, expecting convenient results; wanting to invest the absolute minimum amount of time, yet hoping to reap the most abundant harvest of physical exercise."

2. The Scarcity of Qualified Masters

今日,爱好者及想练好太极拳的人士很多,但要找到合格老师并非易事。
"Today, there are many enthusiasts and individuals who sincerely wish to practice Taijiquan well. However, finding a truly qualified teacher is by no means an easy task."

3. Quantity Over Quality
现在练习太极拳风气吹遍全球,可是量多质微。由于师资人才缺乏
"Currently, the trend of practicing Taijiquan has swept across the entire globe; however, while the quantity is vast, the quality is scarce. This is due to a severe shortage of qualified teaching talent."

4. The Danger of Blind Teaching and Blind Learning

从而导致教法失真,不按规矩,乱教乱学。以误传误,误己事小,误人事大。长以下去太极拳道学前途实不堪设想矣。

"Consequently, this has led to the distortion of teaching methodologies. People do not follow the established rules and standards (Guiju), resulting in chaotic teaching and chaotic learning. Thus, errors are passed down as truths.

To mislead oneself is a small matter, but to mislead others is a grave offense. If this continues long-term, the future of the Dao and internal science (Dao Xue) of Taijiquan is truly unimaginable."

Teacher's Reflections on This Warning
When he wrote about "chaotic teaching and chaotic learning" (Luan Jiao Luan Xue), it came from a place of deep concern for the art. Taijiquan is not merely a soft dance or a casual exercise to be picked up for convenience.

It is a rigorous science of the mind and body.

When teachers who do not understand the internal principles attempt to teach, they alter the Guiju, the precise structural and energetic rules left by the ancestors. When the rules are lost, the art loses its substance, leaving behind only an empty shell.

For those of you who study the Huang style, remember: seek quality over quantity, and do not look for shortcuts where none exist.

Continuity: Like a long river, your practice should be endless. "Longevity is found in the Dao."

Teacher Huang Sheng Shyan always reiterate to Taijiquan practitioner that In taijiquan there is no "top" or "bottom," only the continuous flow of energy.

Whether standing or lying down, the principles remain the same: Yield, Neutralize, and Release.

When you find yourself on the ground, many believe the fight is over but in taijiquan, the ground is simply another surface to borrow energy from.

In the following video, Teacher Huang was demonstrating how the principles of Song (relaxation) was applied in groundwork even when your mobility seems restricted.

Here is the essence of what Teacher Huang was teaching in these video:

1. Borrowing the Attacker's Momentum
When an opponent rushes in to strike or grab you while you are down, their own forward momentum is their greatest weakness.

By remaining relaxed, like a spring, you don’t resist their force.

Instead, you lead it into the ground or bypass it, causing them to overbalance.

Teacher Huang demonstrated using his legs and torso to redirect their weight so they fall over him, rather than on himself.

2. Using the Whole Body as a Leverage.

On the ground, you cannot rely on traditional footwork. Therefore, your waist and hips become the primary engine.

By rotating the core, you create a "vortex" effect.

In the video, you’ll notice that even a small movement of his hip or a slight push with a foot can upend a standing attacker.

This is the application of Lu (Rollback) and Ji (Press) from a horizontal plane.

3. The Concept of "Grounding"
Usually, we ground through our feet.

Here, Teacher Huang demonstrated grounding through his back, shoulders, or hips. Because he was fully connected to the floor, he was able to have a solid base to push against.

When the attacker tries to apply pressure, they are not fighting his muscular strength, they are fighting the resistance of the earth itself, channeled through my relaxed frame.

4. Psychological Calm
The most important lesson is to remain "Song." If you tense up because you are on the ground, you become heavy and easy to pin.

If you remain soft, you are like water, the attacker cannot find a solid place to grip or strike effectively. Teacher Huang able to show that even in a seemingly vulnerable position, a calm mind and a supple body can dictate the flow of the encounter.

Summary of Techniques Shown:

Redirecting Force: Turning the body so the attacker’s strike misses and their own weight carries them past you.

Leg Entrapment: Using the legs to hook or trip the attacker as they step in.

Counter-Pressure: Using a "rebounding" force to send the attacker backward when they try to lean on you.

Continuity: Like a long river, your practice should be endless. "Longevity is found in the Dao."

In the following video demonstrations (1988, at Patrick Kelly's invitation, Teacher Huang Sheng Shyan and Wee Kee Jin visited Auckland, New Zealand to provide intensive training to Pat's students).

The Principles of Internal Movement:
Teacher Huang demo how to neutralize an incoming force without using muscular tension.

When the opponent pushes, do not resist. If you resist, you create a point of contact for them to use their strength.

Empty and Full: My body must remain "empty" so the opponent finds no purchase.

When they overextend, I becomes "full" in an instant.

The Root: Notice my posture. My feet are rooted deep into the earth. The power does not come from my arms; it starts in the feet, is governed by the waist, and is expressed through the fingers.

Neutralization: I am often saying, "Relax more, relax more." When you truly relax, your body becomes like a spring.

The more they push, the more energy you store to return to them.

Neutralizing the Push:

As the student pushes my chest, I sink my Qi to the Dantian and shift my weight slightly. I am "listening" to his force with my skin.

The Fajin (Release):

Once the student's force is spent or their balance is broken, I release. This is not a shove, it is a sudden expansion of internal energy.

Seated Power:

Even while sitting, the spine must be straight and the joints open. The power remains the same because it is based on internal alignment, not leg strength.

"In Taijiquan, the softest thing in the world overcomes the hardest. To become strong, you must first learn to be completely soft."

To master this, you must let go of the desire to win. Let go of the ego that wants to use force.

Only when you are truly relaxed can the Qi flow unhindered, and only then will you understand the true power of Taiji.

Keep practicing, and remember: Relaxation is the foundation of all skill.

Continuity: Like a long river, your practice should be endless. "Longevity is found in the Dao."

Teacher Huang’s direct advice to any practitioners that first we have to understand Taijiquan Classic, you must not just read it with your eyes. You must read it with your joints, your tendons, and your breath. Relax (Song) more.

Most students think they are relaxed, but they are only collapsed. True relaxation is a state of high-quality internal readiness.

Use your mind to lead the Qi, and let the Qi move your body. Only then will these words become your reality.

1. The Foundation: Mind and Spirit
"Taijiquan is the dual cultivation of technique and Dao; training the body while nourishing the mind."

Internal Stillness: The body must be relaxed (Song) while the mind remains quiet and alert. Spirit is held within; do not let it scatter.

The One: "Embrace the original spirit and guard the One." This refers to returning to the state of Wuji, the void, where all movement begins.

The Center: Seek the central path. If you are upright, you do not lean. If you do not lean, your internal energy (Qi) can be adjusted and balanced.

2. The Mechanics of Movement
"In stillness, seek movement; in movement, maintain stillness."

Softness and Strength: "Within softness, there is strength; strength is like flowing water." We do not use "Li" (clumsy force). We use "Jin" (internal power), which flows like a river, yielding yet unstoppable.

The Breath and Qi: Breathe naturally into the Dantian. Let the Qi circulate through the body without stagnation. If the Qi is full, the spirit is natural and the root becomes firm.

Substantial and Insubstantial (Xu & Shi): This is the heart of Taiji. Within the solid, find the empty; within the empty, find the solid. If you are "double-weighted" (stagnant), you are easily defeated. You must transform Yin and Yang constantly.

3. The Strategy of Interaction
"Victory is found in the 'First Opportunity' (Xian Ji); momentum is gained through proper timing."

Yielding: Do not resist force. "Defeat can turn into victory" by using the opponent’s momentum against them.

Structure: Every circle must be perfect; every movement must be rounded. If the circle is broken, the power is lost. If the movement is "choppy," the energy is blocked.

Opening and Closing: There is a rhythm to the body. When you open, the Qi expands; when you close, the energy gathers back to the core.

4. The Ultimate Goal: Virtue and Longevity
"Cultivate virtue without limit; let your merit be immeasurable."

Health: Through correct practice, the body becomes robust and the mind remains clear. "He who is healthy is blessed."

Universal Harmony: Taijiquan is not just for fighting; it is for the "Great Harmony" (Datong). It connects the individual to the universe.

Continuity: Like a long river, your practice should be endless. "Longevity is found in the Dao."

In the following video, Teacher Huang counts "One through Six," he is demonstrating Segmented Rotation on a stick.

Power in Taiji is never a flat line; it is a screw-like motion.

As he moves his arms, he is rotating the humerus, radius, and ulna in opposition to his spine.

Each count represents a "winding" of the internal spring. By the time he reaches "six," the rotation has traveled from his Dan Tien (center) to his fingertips, creating a field of energy that is difficult for an opponent to pe*****te because it is constantly "rolling" away from the point of contact.

Move like a revolving door. If you push a revolving door in the center, it resists; if you push it on the side, it rotates and your force vanishes.

Teacher Huang creates a "micro-rotation" in his torso. As the student’s force enters, Huang rotates his spine slightly.

This converts the student’s linear incoming force into a tangential outgoing force. The student "slips" off the curve of the rotation.

The student is repeatedly repelled. This is the result of Centripetal Neutralization followed by Centrifugal Discharge.

Inhale to the center, exhale to the perimeter.

The Intake: As the student pushes, Teacher Huang "absorbs" the force by rotating his joints inward (Centripetal), drawing the student's balance toward Huang's own center.

The Discharge: Once the student is overextended and "stuck" to the rotation, Teacher Huang reverses the direction of the spiral. Because the student is leaning into a rotating object, the sudden change in vector causes them to be thrown outward (Centrifugal force), much like a stone being released from a sling.

Teacher Huang’s emphasis on the "Small Universe" of the body and the absolute necessity of Yin-Yang balance in every movement.

The Essence of Taiji Principles

The meaning of the two characters Tai Ji (太极) is: "So great there is nothing outside of it; so small there is nothing inside of it." These two characters represent the pinnacle of the ultimate.

Within the myriad things of the universe, there is a principle of growth, flourishing, and cyclical decline. Therefore, there is nothing in the universe that does not manifest through the transformations of Yin and Yang.

The human body is a "Small Universe." When the art of Taijiquan is applied to the human body, there is no part of it that can deviate from the wonders of Yin-Yang transformation.

Principles of Practice
For example:
Internal and External
Upper and Lower
Left and Right
Advancing and Retreating

All of these are entirely governed by the relative pairing of Yin and Yang. Whether moving fast or slow, opening or closing, they must be harmoniously matched without the slightest error.

That is to say: Yin does not depart from Yang, and Yang does not depart from Yin. Every posture must be linked continuously without interruption. The upper and lower body follow one another; the internal and external achieve unity.

Through the mutual interaction of speed and slowness, movement and stillness, and opening and closing, a natural phenomenon of transformation is formed, much like the relationship between outer space, the Earth, and the core of the planet.

Teacher Huang Sheng Shyan as often reiterate and highlighted to the practitioners to focus on the internal mechanics i.e. pivotal role of the waist and the sequential transmission of force (Jin).

Attached the video of teacher Huang who demostrated the classic exposition on moving from physical exertion to internal coordination.

The Core Principle of Body Method
"The center becomes a straight line, this is a method of "finding the straight within the diagonal" (straightness hidden in curvature).

In any martial art or athletic movement, one must pay close attention to the application of waist power.

When the power of the waist is applied correctly, it strengthens the release of force (Fa Li), increases speed, and allows the power of the entire body to concentrate at a single point.

He emphasized that the waist is the source. The root lies in the waist. The waist must be smooth and fluid. The waist, hips, knees, shoulders, neck elbows, palms, wrists, and fingertips, the waist must utilize these nine joints to move with unified power (Jin).

Under this intention, it is even more essential to practice the "Internal Power Nine-Section Stake" (Hun Yuan Jiu Jie Zhuang) morning and night to assist this development.

Teacher Huang highlighted several Teacher Cheng Man Ching's "hallmark" signatures:
1. Central Equilibrium (Zhong Ding)

"The center becomes a straight line" refers to the vertical axis.

Teacher Huang emphasized that even when the body shifts or turns (appearing "diagonal" or curved to an observer), the internal alignment must remain perfectly vertical. This is the "straight within the diagonal", maintaining a meditative, upright spine while the outer frame moves.

2. The Waist as the Commander
In our system, the waist isn't just a body part, it is the "steering wheel." The waist application "concentrates body power into a single point." This refers to the transition from dispersed muscular strength to focused internal Jin. If the waist doesn't lead, the movement is "broken" and lacks the explosive Fa Jin for which teacher Huang was famous.

3. The Nine Joints (Jiu Jie)
He mentioned of the "nine joints" is critical. To achieve the "Song" (loosening) required in the Huang style, the power must pass through nine gates:

Lower 3: Ankles, Knees, Hips.

Middle 3: Waist, Spine, Neck.

Upper 3: Shoulders, Elbows, Wrists.

He insisted that the waist must "utilize" these joints, meaning the waist acts as the engine that pumps energy through these flexible hinges.

4. The Nine-Section Stake (Jiu Jie Zhuang)
The closing recommendation to practice the "Internal Power Nine-Section Stake" refers to the foundational standing and loosening exercises (Song Shen Wu Fa and related vertical standing).

He often stressed that without the "early and late" (consistent) practice of these foundations, the theoretical understanding of the waist remains empty.

This serves as a reminder that Taijiquan is not a "hand" art, but a "waist" art.

To reach the level of teacher Huang, one must find verticality in every movement and ensure that every joint in the body is connected to the central axle of the waist.
