When an infected a**l gland fails to heal properly, this gives rise to an abnormal tract, also known as an 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗹𝗮, which forms between the a**l gland to the skin around the a**s.

Symptoms of an a**l fistula include:
• Persistent pain and swelling
• Fever and chills

In his work as a colorectal specialist for over a decade, 𝗗𝗿 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝗹𝗲𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗮𝗻 has remained steadfast in his commitment to combating colorectal cancer through both clinical care and preventive efforts.

As the former Clinical Director of the Colorectal Cancer Screening Programme in KTPH, Dr Tan led initiatives to encourage early screenings and raise awareness of lifestyle changes in reducing cancer risk.

He was also part of the committee of the Singapore Cancer Society Colorectal Cancer Awareness Campaign, and served as the Surgical Department Lead of the Nutrition Workgroup at KTPH.

A**l fissures are small tears that form on the lining of the a**s.

Most cases of a**l fissure, when mild, do not require surgical intervention and can be treated with medications, sitz baths and stool softeners.

However, should the fissure persists or is more serious, surgery can help by making an incision at the internal sphincter muscle to reduce pressure and facilitate blood flow to the fissure for quicker healing.

Having completed a fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles (US), Dr Sharon Koh has in-depth expertise in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Dr Koh has also published several peer-reviewed papers in the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases and Annals of Surgery journals, and presented her research in several international conferences.

In 2014, she was also awarded an international research grant for her devotion to the research of IBD.
