Art has a gentle way of bringing me back to what I’ve been taught — and what I sometimes forget.

When I was training to become an art therapist, four things were deeply emphasised:
• Trust the process
• Stay with the unknown
• Have high ethical standards
• Strengthen self care practices

As I began this piece, I noticed the familiar doubt creeping in — not knowing how it would turn out, questioning each step. And then, almost like a quiet nudge, I was reminded: trust the process, stay with the unknown.

So I did. I let go, stayed present, and allowed the work to unfold. And somewhere along the way, the uncertainty softened. I found my rhythm again.

Now, looking at the finished piece, I feel a sense of calm satisfaction — not just from the outcome, but from having stayed through the uncertainty.

This process is also my way of grounding and caring for myself. A reminder that self-care doesn’t only belong in moments of stress or overwhelm. It can be something we gently weave into our everyday lives.

On that note — what if grounding wasn’t just something we reach for in difficult moments, but something we practise regularly? Making grounding a habitual practice can be a way for our bodies to become familiar with stillness, safety, and balance.

Trust the process. Even when it feels unclear. Especially then.

Lately, I’ve been using oil pastels to ground myself. There’s something so satisfying about the friction on the paper and the pleasant experience of blending.

In this piece and the previous ones, I found myself drawn to a gentle mix of pastel colors for the background, creating a soft contrast to that really strong, vibrant green.

This whole process has actually been making me think about a fellow art therapist’s graduating piece. She created 83 beautiful waves as a form of response art for her work with clients.

Nature’s Anchor 🍃🌊
There really is something deeply stabilizing about connecting with elements of nature through art. While the world might feel like a rush of shifting colors, the leaf itself is a symbol of presence—drawing its strength from the light while staying firmly connected to its source.

This practice is a reminder for me to plant my feet, breathe deep, and find my own center, regardless of the season.

~The Power of Grounding

We often focus on reaching for the light, but true growth starts in the soil. Grounding is the practice of pulling our energy out of our heads and back into our bodies and the present moment.

~ Why Grounding Matters

For everyone, it’s a “reset” for the nervous system. For therapists, it’s a clinical necessity. To hold space for others’ heavy emotions (the “droplets” we carry), we must be a solid, well-rooted container. Without roots, we risk burnout and compassion fatigue.

~ Grounding Through Art

Art therapy offers a tactile, sensory path to the “here and now.”
• Sensory Texture: Using oil pastels requires physical pressure. Feeling the “drag” of the wax on paper anchors you in your body.
• Symbolic Stability: Drawing roots—like the deep, multidimensional ones here—helps us visualize our support systems and internal strength.
• The Horizon Line: Creating a clear boundary between the “earth” and “sky” helps us define the space between our internal world and external demands.

The heavier the sun shines, the deeper our roots must go. 🌿✨

✨ Closing a Chapter, Opening Another ✨

After more than 7 years, I am closing Solace Art Psychotherapy.

This journey has been filled with challenges, steep growth, and countless lessons. Running Solace has stretched me in every direction — as a therapist, a manager, a marketer, a speaker, and an entrepreneur. From people management, HR, and social media, to pitching proposals, networking, hosting an art exhibition, publishing an arts-based resource book, and presenting at international conferences — Solace has been my biggest classroom.

The road was not always easy. I went into a dark space at one point — overwhelmed by stress and the weight of too many responsibilities. I lost my light. But through that darkness, I discovered the importance of self-care. By creating and honouring my own self-care strategies, I slowly found my way back to the light. These practices continue to guide me today, and they remind me that healing is an ongoing journey, even for therapists.

I’ve also had my resilience tested in other ways — from organisations using my proposals without permission, to people borrowing my content without giving credit. These moments, though difficult, strengthened me and reminded me that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”

What I am most grateful for is the space Solace gave me to develop a trauma-informed structure that became the heart of my practice. It allowed me to walk alongside clients in their most vulnerable moments and to witness healing in its rawest form. For that, I will always carry Solace with me.

Goodbyes, I’ve learned, are simply doorways to new beginnings.

I leave Solace feeling proud, thankful, and deeply enriched by the many clients and therapists who shaped me into the practitioner I am today.

🌱 On 3 September 2025, I begin a new chapter as Senior Art Therapist at Singapore General Hospital (SGH). I look forward to another season of steep learning, new challenges, and meaningful growth.

Here’s to endings that open into beginnings. 🩵

Just finished ‘What Happened to You?’. A helpful read for anyone interested in trauma. It breaks down complex concepts into understandable parts and shares real-life stories. Affirms some of the things I’ve seen in my own work.

The author also highlights the need for trauma-informed approaches in our societal systems, recognizing the importance of creating supportive environments that better serve our communities. He also emphasises the crucial role of art and community connection in the healing process from trauma.

Worth a read if you’re interested in the topic.
