✨ Closing a Chapter, Opening Another ✨

After more than 7 years, I am closing Solace Art Psychotherapy.

This journey has been filled with challenges, steep growth, and countless lessons. Running Solace has stretched me in every direction — as a therapist, a manager, a marketer, a speaker, and an entrepreneur. From people management, HR, and social media, to pitching proposals, networking, hosting an art exhibition, publishing an arts-based resource book, and presenting at international conferences — Solace has been my biggest classroom.

The road was not always easy. I went into a dark space at one point — overwhelmed by stress and the weight of too many responsibilities. I lost my light. But through that darkness, I discovered the importance of self-care. By creating and honouring my own self-care strategies, I slowly found my way back to the light. These practices continue to guide me today, and they remind me that healing is an ongoing journey, even for therapists.

I’ve also had my resilience tested in other ways — from organisations using my proposals without permission, to people borrowing my content without giving credit. These moments, though difficult, strengthened me and reminded me that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”

What I am most grateful for is the space Solace gave me to develop a trauma-informed structure that became the heart of my practice. It allowed me to walk alongside clients in their most vulnerable moments and to witness healing in its rawest form. For that, I will always carry Solace with me.

Goodbyes, I’ve learned, are simply doorways to new beginnings.

I leave Solace feeling proud, thankful, and deeply enriched by the many clients and therapists who shaped me into the practitioner I am today.

🌱 On 3 September 2025, I begin a new chapter as Senior Art Therapist at Singapore General Hospital (SGH). I look forward to another season of steep learning, new challenges, and meaningful growth.

Here’s to endings that open into beginnings. 🩵

Just finished ‘What Happened to You?’. A helpful read for anyone interested in trauma. It breaks down complex concepts into understandable parts and shares real-life stories. Affirms some of the things I’ve seen in my own work.

The author also highlights the need for trauma-informed approaches in our societal systems, recognizing the importance of creating supportive environments that better serve our communities. He also emphasises the crucial role of art and community connection in the healing process from trauma.

Worth a read if you’re interested in the topic.

As we close the chapter on 2024, I’m reflecting on a transformative year for Solace Art Psychotherapy. This year, we shifted our focus inward—prioritizing rest and embracing a slower, more intentional pace.

We dedicated ourselves to in-depth individual art psychotherapy, offering our clients deeper, more personalized support. The result? Meaningful breakthroughs, renewed resilience, and a space for healing that nurtures both clients and therapists alike.

Thank you to our incredible team and courageous clients for making this year so special. Here’s to 2025—a year of continued growth, balance, and healing. 💛

🎉 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫, 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐘𝐨𝐮? 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐲.

As the new year approaches, remember that it’s OK to move at your own pace. 🩵💛

✨ It’s OK if you don’t want to party.
✨ It’s OK if you don’t have a resolution.
✨ It’s OK if you’ve not achieved all your goals.
✨ It’s OK if you want to rest.
✨ It’s OK if you need a quiet start to the new year.
✨ It’s OK if you don’t feel ready for the new year.
✨ It’s OK if you feel sad during the new year.

Your mental health matters, and there’s no “right” way to step into the new year. Whether you celebrate with a bang or quietly reflect at home, be kind to yourself. 🌿

Let’s embrace 2025 with compassion—for others and especially for ourselves. 🫂

We often hear people describing themselves as a ‘cry baby’ or a ‘hot headed person’. We are here to remind you that emotions and identities are two distinct concepts:

1. 𝙀𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨: Emotions are temporary, subjective experiences that arise in response to various stimuli, such as thoughts, events, or interactions.

2. 𝙄𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙩𝙮: Identity, on the other hand, refers to our sense of self, encompassing our values, beliefs, personality traits, roles, and affiliations. Identities are relatively stable and enduring aspects of ourselves.

𝙎𝙤, 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙪𝙧𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨?

Emotions serve several essential functions:

1. 𝙄𝙣𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙁𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠: Emotions provide us with valuable information about our environment, relationships, and internal states.
2. 𝙈𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘿𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙚: Emotions motivate us to take action, pursue goals, and avoid harm. They drive us to seek pleasure, comfort, and connection.
3. 𝙎𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣: Emotions help us connect with others, express ourselves, and communicate our needs and desires.
4. 𝙈𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜: Emotions help us remember significant events, associate experiences with emotions, and learn from our mistakes.
5. 𝙋𝙝𝙮𝙨𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙈𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙒𝙚𝙡𝙡-𝙗𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜: Emotions influence our physical and mental health. Chronic stress, anxiety, or depression can have negative effects on our well-being, while positive emotions like gratitude, joy, and love can promote resilience and overall health.

So remember, while emotions can be a significant part of our experiences, they are not the same as our identities. Emotions come and go, whereas identities provide a sense of continuity and coherence.
