The Overhead Press is a very commonly known and used upper body exercise in athletic strength training.

What most people didn’t know is that we have been doing it in a way that limits transfer of the upper body strength gained via this golden exercise.

Self Check:

1. Where is the load?
- Shoulders + Back? ❌

2. How’s the load distribution on your feet?
- Fore/Rear/Outside/Inside ?

3. Do you feel relaxedly strong with the load over your head?
- Can you talk with the load overhead?

A lot of times, we have athletes who goes to the gym to lift in an attempt to improve their sports performance. This line of thought is correct.

The question to ask ourselves often is

💙“Is it truly about how much weight you’re lifting?”
Or is it more about
🧡“how are you moving with/without the load?”

Consistency is something we all strive for when it comes to performance based training. And the things we can measure are the easy ones to get right.. it’s really more about the intangible things.. like how you feel about a certain movement… that are harder to get consistent with.

A point to ponder for all you barbell lifting people:

“Is it the movement that forms the ideal bar path for you…? Or is it the bar path that makes your movement ideal?”

Cheers
K

What is after ? Transitioning back to is often overlooked in the current system. The public health system often prescribes rehabilitation sessions without a consistent push for injured athletes to get ready (physically and psychologically) before going back to their sport.

This actually increases the risk of re-injury once the intensity of training ramps up. Having coached for over 16 years and equipped with a mastery of movements harnessed through multiple finesse-based sports practices, Coach Kae strives to close up the gap between injury rehab and being 100% back in the sport and beyond (also known as ).

Many a times, clients who approached us are general populations and office workers who engage in sports in a ad-hoc basis.

Most of the issues we help to resolve are muscular pain at rest and worsens during movement. These are usually caused by movement dysfunctions which causes irritation when the muscles around the region tightens up in a guarding manner to protect the joints.

Relearning the proper alignments of the joints involved and engaging the right muscles for the specific job more often than not resolves the issues at its root.

“No man is an island”
- John Donne

The phrase expresses the idea that human beings do badly when isolated from others, and thus we all need to be part of a community in order to thrive.

This is especially true when it comes to fat loss, fitness and wellness. Motivation rides high at the start, dwindles by the 3rd or 4th week and fades off eventually to the temptations of upcoming holiday binges. (Christmas!).

Everyone benefits from having a personal coach who will guide you and hold you accountable for exercise and fat loss.

Contact us now for a complimentary consultation and let us help you get fitter and healthier.

Quote of the Article:

“…How much stronger do you need to become in your goblet-squat/Backsquat to squat on your toilet bowl to s**t effortlessly? How much do you need to deadlift for 12 reps to carry your groceries from the floor for the 3-4 times between NTUC to interchange to your home?…”

For this article I’m specifically addressing those of us who “goes to the gym for health purposes”. This article can be seen as pretty controversial coming from a “gym trainer”. The opinions in this article is solely from my own study, observation and training from professional level coach...

If you have Time to do only One Exercise, what will you do to maximise your gains?

Squat/Pull-ups/Deadlifts were once my go to choices.. in fact, I’ll still probably be bias to squatting now.

But over the years of growth, I find that forward bends actually have brought upon the biggest improvement for me in terms of mobility gains. With increased freedom of movement comes health and performance gains.

With that said, we should all focus on wellness instead of just blindly chasing numbers. I’m so glad I know that at age 37, not 38. No regrets for what I’ve chased, not gonna be dumb and pursue temporary pride/glory over my later years of independence too!

Do you know that forward bends are actually great for spinal health when you do it with proper intent to work the abs instead of only stretching the back?

Try it yourself:
Start slow, do it segmentally (one spinal column at a time), with deep inhalation and exhalation!

If you feel too tight in the legs, elevate your heels and try it again. Aim for some slow relaxing repetitions, no need for bounce or extreme range!💪🏾🧡

Have fun, and may you have a great rest after a fantastic recharging weekend!
