The Overhead Press is a very commonly known and used upper body exercise in athletic strength training.

What most people didn’t know is that we have been doing it in a way that limits transfer of the upper body strength gained via this golden exercise.

Self Check:

1. Where is the load?
- Shoulders + Back? ❌

2. How’s the load distribution on your feet?
- Fore/Rear/Outside/Inside ?

3. Do you feel relaxedly strong with the load over your head?
- Can you talk with the load overhead?

A lot of times, we have athletes who goes to the gym to lift in an attempt to improve their sports performance. This line of thought is correct.

The question to ask ourselves often is

💙“Is it truly about how much weight you’re lifting?”
Or is it more about
🧡“how are you moving with/without the load?”

Consistency is something we all strive for when it comes to performance based training. And the things we can measure are the easy ones to get right.. it’s really more about the intangible things.. like how you feel about a certain movement… that are harder to get consistent with.

A point to ponder for all you barbell lifting people:

“Is it the movement that forms the ideal bar path for you…? Or is it the bar path that makes your movement ideal?”

Cheers

What is after ? Transitioning back to is often overlooked in the current system. The public health system often prescribes rehabilitation sessions without a consistent push for injured athletes to get ready (physically and psychologically) before going back to their sport.

This actually increases the risk of re-injury once the intensity of training ramps up. Having coached for over 16 years and equipped with a mastery of movements harnessed through multiple finesse-based sports practices, Coach Kae strives to close up the gap between injury rehab and being 100% back in the sport and beyond (also known as ).

Many a times, clients who approached us are general populations and office workers who engage in sports in a ad-hoc basis.

Most of the issues we help to resolve are muscular pain at rest and worsens during movement. These are usually caused by movement dysfunctions which causes irritation when the muscles around the region tightens up in a guarding manner to protect the joints.

Relearning the proper alignments of the joints involved and engaging the right muscles for the specific job more often than not resolves the issues at its root.
