No.12 : Steph (33) & Pivoting Prowess

“I wanted to become a rockstar graphic designer but that unfortunately didn’t come naturally to me. In my first job at a creative agency, I started out as a graphic designer but transitioned to a more producing/ managing type of role. My colleagues were so much more talented! I also began editing and writing for the firm’s indie magazines. In hindsight, these were gaps in the office that I had to fill because I couldn’t do the thing that I set out to do. I struggled trying to fill these new roles while managing an identity crisis.”

“But I’ve come to realise that the sooner you acknowledge your weaknesses, the sooner you find your strengths. It’s okay to give up sometimes. That’s the only way you can open yourself up to new things that suit you better.”

The twelfth feature of Our Tender Deeds (OTD) is the final entry in its series written in collaboration with .mind.if , a ground-up initiative committed to celebrating and uplifting Singapore’s Communication Design Industry 🌾 We speak to Stephanie (), author of self-published volume Self Made: Creative Lives in Southeast Asia, and how she pivoted to arts & culture writing and producing.

No.11 : John(38) & Buying Time

“Art school felt more like a procrastination for growing up. I’m sure it helped with what I’m pursuing now but I can’t say how. I wouldn’t label myself an ‘illustrator’ since that has its commercial labelling, and I think at this point I’m more suited to drawing for myself.”

“I think there's always doubt when creating stuff and then showing it publicly, I find that it's important to overcome it with reps. This helps to envelope the passes and fails into the same thing. ”

The eleventh feature of Our Tender Deeds (OTD) has been written in collaboration with .mind.if , a ground-up initiative committed to celebrating and uplifting Singapore's Communication Design Industry 🌾 We speak to John () of about prioritising time as the most valuable thing he purchases every month.

No.10 : Hafi (34) & Relational Identity

“My creative process isn’t necessarily the same for every project or brief as there’s no set template that works for everything. The colour palette I’ve become known for, was actually a choice I made when I was starting out and felt it easier to limit myself to a number of colours when working on a piece. My works usually portray women so you could say that I am also highly inspired by the women in my life and those who came before me. I like my art to be relational with a touch of humour.”

“I’ve always wanted to be an independent illustrator or an artist for as long as I can imagine. I do not come from a privileged background so could not start off my career as one nor consider being a freelancer to boot. I always felt like I had to have a stable income to support myself, my lifestyle and fulfil my filial duties towards my parents.”

The tenth feature of Our Tender Deeds (OTD) has been written in collaboration with .mind.if , a ground-up initiative committed to celebrating and uplifting Singapore's Communication Design Industry 🌾 We speak to Hafi (), independent illustator and co-founder of to learn about what ties it altogether for the celebrated artist — the thread of relational identity; with culture, with womanhood, with family and with one’s self. No.9 : Hwee En (32) & Her Becoming

“The first three years of freelancing, I said yes to everything that sounded interesting to me - from managing art and exhibition projects to rebooting , to festival social content, to working at a streetwear distribution company. And in between all these, venture into documentary filmmaking for Class Acts.””

“I vividly remember choosing Business Management in school because I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to do. It was through a whole lot of trial and error that I’ve come to understand what I want - and don’t want - to do with my time and energy. Creativity to me is — as much a lifestyle as it is a skill or output.”

The ninth feature of Our Tender Deeds (OTD) has been written in collaboration with .mind.if , a ground-up initiative committed to celebrating and uplifting Singapore's Communication Design Industry 🌾 We speak to Hwee ( ), freelance project manager and co-producer of Class Acts and learnt about her serendipitious detours and keen self-knowledge settling into her thirties. Link in bio.

The Don’t Mind If Inaugural Industry Report comprises of 200+ beautifully designed & illustrated pages presenting readers with a wide variety of helpful observations, insights, learnings & sharings from 506 survey respondents and guest contributors.

With exposed stitch binding, a dual Pantone colour treatment (+K), and using dead stock paper specially provided by RJ Paper, we’re extremely happy with how it’s been designed and we wish to once again acknowledge the amazing people behind the progress that was made for the report. But more than this, we’re so proud of what this publication symbolises and stands for. Be it the celebrating of the local creative/communications design community, the uplifting of standards and progressive work practices, building awareness & empathy across the many roles, disciplines and environments that our community has, or safeguarding the hope and value of our sector for the next generation of creatives to enjoy and deepen as they kickstart and further their careers. While we may still have some way to go, we hope we’re helping those who digest the report to get just that bit closer to our collective goal.

Hello again! Its been a dizzying past few months for us filled with the completion of the inaugural industry report, fulfilling orders and furthering conversations with people and organisations who can make positive, lasting impact in the way local creatives are perceived, engaged and valued. It’s been quite a whirlwind! The response has been overwhelmingly positive but it also wouldn’t have been possible without each of you in the community who trusted us and supported this ground-up, zero-budget initiative. So THANK YOU once again to each of the 506 of you who took the time to provide us with honest responses to our survey back in 2020, to the copywriters, illustrators, data analysts, guest writers, graphic designers, paper suppliers, printers, animators, photographers for helping this initiative get off the ground - and not to mention everyone who ordered a book (or a few!) or donated to the cause.

We are over the moon to have cleared 80% of our initial inventory and are only able to celebrate this milestone because of your giving.
