Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s risk is higher for people with body fat in two specific areas

The study, published in the journal Neurology — the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology — linked higher levels of body fat in the arms and belly with a greater chance of developing these conditions.

In another key finding, people who have more muscle strength were at lower risk of developing these diseases.

"Overall, the key takeaway message from our study finding is that body composition and cardiovascular diseases may be potential targets for preventing neurodegenerative diseases," said lead study author Shishi Xu, a clinician in the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at West China Hospital of Sichuan University, in a statement to Fox News Digital.

The study group that had higher levels of belly fat had a 13% greater chance of developing neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s compared to those with lower levels, the researchers found.

Excess body fat in certain areas could make people more prone to neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, a new study suggests. Doctors revealed the link.

How to loosen up those painful muscle knots in your neck and back to relieve discomfort

If you’ve ever had a shoulder massage or used a foam roller, you have probably found a few small painful bumps deep in a muscle. Once you’re aware of these bulges – called myofascial trigger points, or muscle knots – they can be tough to ignore.

But what exactly are muscle knots, and how do they form? Can they cause any long-term issues? And what are the best ways to get rid of them?

WHAT CAUSES MUSCLE KNOTS?

Muscle knots tend to form when a muscle is overloaded, either through exercise or poor posture. They are most commonly found in the neck, upper trapezius and upper shoulder muscles, as well as the mid-back, forearms and calves.

For instance, leaning over a computer for hours a day may not feel like a workout, but it can fatigue your neck, shoulder, back and forearm muscles, said Dr Josh Goldman, associate director of the Center for Sports Medicine at UCLA Health. “Your neck is bent down staring at a computer screen for eight hours,” he said. “That’s a pretty aggressive load on the body.”

When muscles are overtaxed, they can become damaged, causing certain points to shorten or tighten – and stay that way. Some researchers believe the surrounding tissue (or fascia) thickens and becomes less elastic, creating a dense ball. They theorise this may lead to decreased blood flow and fluid in the area, as well as inflammation.

These tender bumps in your neck or back can be a pain, but a few research-backed strategies can help to relieve discomfort.

Active components of ginkgo biloba may improve early cognitive recovery after stroke
American Stroke Association International Stroke Conference 2024, Abstract 62

Research Highlights:

In a study conducted in China, adults treated with 14 days of intravenous injections of ginkgo diterpene lactone meglumine (GDLM) — a combination of biologically active components of ginkgo biloba — after an ischemic (clot-caused) stroke had better cognitive recovery at 14 days and 90 days.
IV preparations of ginkgo biloba’s active ingredients are widely used in China as a complementary treatment for ischemic stroke.
While oral ginkgo biloba supplements are widely available and marketed in the U.S., gingko biloba is not approved for medicinal use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Our Story

Ong Fujian Chinese Physician Hall is a traditional Chinese medical (TCM) hall established since 1986. We have experienced professors, doctors and acupuncturists providing services with one stop traditional Chinese medical treatment for all.

Our objectives is to improve the quality of life and mental state of our customers while getting to the root of the health problem. We use traditional Chinese medical theory with western approach of diagnosis to combine both elements together. This results in a modern advanced TCM treatment method for our customers in which they are able to feel safe and comfortable, and also allowing customers to feel minimal pain while having professional and effective treatment.

We used to be known as Fujian Chinese Physical & Medical Hall. In 1996, we changed our name to Ong Fujian Chinese Physician Hall. In February 2004, we shifted to a larger and more conducive premise at 259 Joo Chiat road in order to provide an integrated service with more variety of treatment on the various types of illnesses.
