Alex Cameron- Dietitian

Alex Cameron- Dietitian I'm Alex, NZ Registered Dietitian, Fertility & Pregnancy specialist. Virtual consults worldwide. I'm Alex- dietitian, mum, and founder of Wellful.

Making the decision to start a family is life changing in so many ways, and the journey to pregnancy can be exciting, heart breaking, and challenging all at once. I have worked as a dietitian across for many years specialising in weight loss, womens health, diabetes, and many other long term conditions. However, when I made the decision to start my own family in 2020, I quickly discovered that nutrition has an imperative part to play in not just our chances of conceiving, but also the life that our child will go on to live. This lead me to become a fertility and pregnancy specialist dietitian, with a mission to support other women to get pregnant, experience a great pregnancy, and optimise their baby's first 1000 days of life. I now work with clients all across the world through consultations and programs, sharing science-backed recommendations and personalised nutrition support every day.

🌸 Have you recently had a failed embryo transfer? ☹️💕

Maybe you have been told to just go into another cycle straight away and "hopefully this one's the one!". 🤷‍♀️

But if you feel like you could be doing more than just crossing your fingers and hoping for a different outcome then you are absolutely right.🙂

Because it takes more than just a healthy embryo for a transfer to work... You also need to have a healthy environment for that embryo to implant into. 💜

Nutrition and supplements play a key role in creating this healthy environment and increasing your chances of a successful transfer and successful pregnancy.🙋‍♀️

An order for your next transfer to be successful you need...
✔️ Nutrient rich blood flow to the uterus
✔️ Low levels of inflammation
✔️ Enhanced endometrial receptivity
✔️ Healthy hormone levels
✔️ A thick, healthy endometrium
.. And you can do all of this with the correct nutrition and supplementation.

🌟 This is exactly why I offer the embryo transfer intensive consultation. 🙌 I work with you to create a personalised nutrition and supplement plan that supports you to have a successful next FET. Plus you don't need to prepare for this months and advance like with egg collection - I can help you to increase your chances of success next transfer.

DM me FET for more information ❤️ If you want to start right now with learning my top nutrition strategies to prepare for your next transfer- head to my FREE IVF training (link in bio).

Preparing for IVF? This is for you...

IVF can feel overwhelming and all-consuming — appointments, injections, scans… and then trying to figure out what to eat and which supplements actually help? 😩😩😩 The good news? It has been proven time and time again that nutrition can play a powerful role in boosting your chances of success, and it’s often overlooked.

Here are just 4 (of many!) ways that nutrition has been proven to help:

1️⃣ Reducing oxidative stress boosts s***m & egg quality by up to 30%
2️⃣ Supporting your vaginal & uterine microbiome doubles implantation chances
3️⃣ Eating the right nutrients increases healthy embryos
4️⃣ Vitamins like D, iron & zinc promote a strong uterine lining for implantation

It doesn’t have to be complicated or involve drastic changes — just targeted, research-backed strategies that fit your lifestyle and fertility needs.

Fertility is one of the few areas of nutrition where supplementation can make a huge difference in fertility outcomes.

Why?

Normally as dietitians we advocate for "food first". However, in studies investigating the impact of nutrition on fertility and pregnancy outcomes, often the amounts shown to make a significant difference are at therapeutic levels which are just completely unrealistic to eat. For example- to reach the recommended 350mg/ day of vitamin E proven to support thickening of the endometrium, you would need to eat 7 cups of sunflower seeds every day 😅🙃

These nutrients are some of the most important when it comes to fertility- but there is more to it than this. Dose, type, timing, and duration are all incredibly important. It's also common for people to arrive to their consultations with me taking more supplements than they can count after recommendation upon recommendation from friends and forums.

If a supplement has the potential to improve fertility, it has the potential to impact it negatively too- so it is SO important to get it right.

If you want to know exactly what supplements are right for your fertility and avoid months and months of guessing and hoping- then make sure to book for my express supplement consultation. In 30 minutes you will have a 100% science-backed plan that is proven to boost your fertility all for only $79!

FERTILITY FRIENDLY SNACKS 😋

Convenience foods aren’t necessarily “bad” for us. Plus eating to support your fertility doesn’t necessarily mean spending hours in the kitchen cooking and baking.

⏰ If you’re time poor, use convenience foods to your advantage! These are also super helpful for when you’re on the road travelling and need simple, easy to transport options.

Here are some convenience options that you can use to help build a fertility friendly snack. Aim for a combination of protein and high fibre carbs when possible for maximum long lasting satiety.

If you wondering where to begin with your fertility diet then make sure to head to the link in my bio and download my FREE fertility guide. I cover foods to avoid, what to include, key tips on supplements, and so much more!

Most of us start out trying to get pregnant without even thinking about blood tests. I often hear; “Isn’t that just for later down the track during pregnancy..? Or once we have been trying for 6+ months to see what else might be going on?” 🤷‍♀️

The truth is that going and getting a simple blood test through your GP can save you months of “trying” to get pregnant as it can help you to pinpoint important issues that could be major roadblocks in your ability to conceive. Absolutely everyone should be doing this and I mean PRIOR to even trying for a baby (3-6 months ideally!). If you haven’t yet done this- then let this be your sign to take action.

Do what tests to have? I cover this in more detail in my free fertility nutrition guide the "Top 5 Fertility Nutrition Mistakes to Avoid". You can download this now through the link in my bio! Or DM me GUIDE and I will send it your way.

Preparing for egg retrieval?

IVF is exhausting. Mentally, physically, emotionally. Between appointments, scans, and injections- it's hard to even fathom thinking about food as well- but trust me- the research shows (with a massive 50% increase in pregnancy rates in women doing IVF who worked on their diet!) that it is SO worth it.

Working in this space for a long time I have seen many mistakes in the prep phase of egg retrieval. Here are 3 most common ones that i wanted to share so that you don't make the same mistakes too...

❌ 1. Drinking alcohol. Despite what your clinic may have said is safe- even moderate alcohol in the weeks before egg collection can:
- Reduce the number of mature oocytes
- Lower fertilization and embryo quality
-Increase oxidative stress
PMID: 17978119, 29030106

❌ 2. Skipping protein at meals

You need protein to:
- Support hormone production
- Fuel follicle growth
- Maintain stable blood sugar (which impacts ovulation and egg quality)

Aim for 20–30g per meal, and add protein to every snack.

3. ❌ Stopping all supplements or taking random supplements
-Misses a prime opportunity to prepare your eggs 100% for retrieval
-Potentially impacts on uterine health and embryo transfer if key supplements are skipped
-Can lead to excesses intakes or interactions
-Misses key common nutrient gaps like choline, iodine, iron, calcium, and selenium

Has your doctor just told you to take folate but then Instagram, TikTok and the fertility forums are so full of complicated supplement routines that you're wondering what else you can do? 🤔

Do fertility supplements really work? Will they help me get pregnant faster? 🧐

The research has spoken and shows that those supplementing with a prenatal experience better fertilization rates higher pregnancy rates! 🙌

The other important consideration is of the impact of individual nutrients e.g. :

👉 Women with inadequate iron levels have a 60% lower chance of successful pregnancy

👉 Inadequate niacin (vitamin B3) may be associated with a greater risk of miscarriage and other pregnancy complications

👉 Inadequate Vit D has been associated with irregular cycles, lower IVF success rates, PCOS symptoms, increased miscarriage risk.

👉 Women with B12 deficiency have a 54% increased risk of ovulatory infertility
.. and these are just 4 stats off the top of my head! I haven't even touched on the POSITIVE impacts of correct supplementation on specific factors of infertility such as ovulation, fertilisation, egg quality, and implantation.

It's also important to remember that supplements can also just as easily cause harm. If it’s biologically active in the dose you’re taking, and able to make a positive change to your egg health, s***m health, cycles or implantation, it’s also *just* as capable of causing something to go wrong.

Determining which supplements you should take while trying to conceive can be a tricky process. Not everyone requires the same nutrients in the same amounts.

👉If you are keen to find out more about getting your very own fertility nutrition plan to boost your chances of a healthy pregnancy, just DM me and tell me a bit about your unique situation and goals. ❤

*Please note that individual supplement advice varies based on your health conditions and requirements. Please don't use this post as a shopping list and instead get personalised advice.
