Heat or Ice?
A common question that seems straight forward but couldn’t quite grasp how it works.
Heat therapy improves blood flows, whereas cold therapy restrict blood flows.
If you’re mostly desk bound (which most of us are, especially a desk bound job) chances are, our neck or lower back tightness comes from SLOW blood circulation. So having a heat pack can do us a lot of good in making sure it soften up tight muscles, hence helps to improve joint tension and tightness.
Ice therapy is useful for acute (new) injuries like sprain/strain after workout, it helps to reduce swelling and inflammations, hence decreases the pain that’s elicited from an ongoing swelling.
So we can see that, ice pack may not do us much good if we have been seated for 6-8 hours and we are experiencing muscle tightness and tension, whereas heat pack may not provide much pain relieve for fresh new injuries due to the fact that the pain we experienced are from the ongoing swelling that causes the pain and discomfort.
If heat or ice therapy has little effect for your neck and lower back pain, chances are, it may not be a muscle related problems. Heading down to have your spine check may be an easy options in identifying the root cause of the problem.
