Embracing emotions on your path to mental wellness
Today is World Mental Health Day. This year’s theme highlights the importance of prioritising mental health in the workplace to address burnout—a challenge many in the modern workforce face.
As someone who’s self-employed and passionate about my work, I know how easy it is to slide into workaholism and risk burnout if I don't prioritise self-care. One of my favourite ways to recharge is spending time with family, especially my nieces. As I enjoyed bonding with them over the past few days, my nieces remind me that emotions are not something to be hidden but shared.
Mental health is a delicate balance of understanding, care, and growth, with our emotions playing a large part in it. While we strive to manage our emotions, we can learn so much from children. They express their feelings freely—whether joy, frustration, or sadness—and through that openness, they show us how natural it is to feel.
As adults, it’s essential to help children regulate their emotions and apply that same kindness to ourselves. Give yourself the grace to express, process, and heal without judgment, just as a child does. Allow yourself the freedom to be present with your emotions. Embrace your emotional journey with the same honesty and openness you would encourage in children. Let's create spaces where everyone feels supported, seen, and heard, starting with how we care for ourselves.
Seek support when needed; no one should face their struggles alone. Whether you're talking to a therapist, a friend, or a coach, the ability to share brings relief. We all face challenges, regardless of who we are or what we do. It’s okay to not have everything under control. When we speak up about our mental health, we give others permission to do the same, creating a ripple of healing and understanding in our communities.
