Dogs and Skin Cancer
You might not give much thought to dog skin cancer, because your loyal companion is covered with hair and protected from the sun. But you should know that skin tumors, which may be cancerous, are the most common tumors found in dogs. Fortunately, when caught early, many cases of dog skin cancer can be treated successfully.

Not all varieties of dog skin cancer are caused by sun exposure, but sun damage to the skin can be a factor. All dogs have certain areas, such as the nose and the ears, where there is no or little hair to shield sensitive skin from the sun. Additionally, pooches with light-colored or thin coats are more susceptible to sun damage over their entire bodies.

Because some types of dog skin cancer, including dog melanomas and mast cell tumors, can be fatal if untreated, it is important that you have your veterinarian check any suspicious growths.

Types of Skin Cancer in Dogs
There are different types of dog skin cancers. Three of the most common include:
Malignant melanoma. Just as in people, malignant melanoma is a type of skin cancer in dogs that affects pigmented cells known as melanocytes. Dogs often develop benign tumors in pigmented cells that do not metastasize, which are called melanocytes. These tumors are found in areas of the dog’s body that have hair.

Most malignant melanomas occur on the mouth or mucous membranes, although about 10% of the time they are found on parts of the body covered with hair. They tend to grow extremely fast and are likely to spread to other organs, including the lungs and liver.
No one knows exactly why melanomas develop, although genetic factors seem to play a role. Additionally, trauma or compulsive licking of a particular spot on the skin may increase the likelihood that cells will multiply, thereby raising the chances that cells will mutate during the division process and become cancerous.

Squamous cell carcinoma. This form of dog skin cancer is often caused by exposure to the sun. Scientists believe there may also be a connection between the papilloma virus and the development of squamous cell tumors in certain dogs.

Squamous cell cancers can spread to surrounding lymph nodes. They are aggressive and may lead to destruction of much of the tissue around the tumor.

Mast cell tumors. These dog skin cancers, which occur in the mast cells of the immune system, are the most common skin tumors in canines. Veterinarians don’t know what causes mast cell tumors to develop, although there have been cases where they have been linked to inflammation or irritants on the skin. Evidence suggests genetic factors are often important, and the hormones estrogen and progesterone may also affect cancer growth.

Dog Skin Cancer: Which Breeds Are at Risk?
All dogs can get skin cancer, but certain types of cancer more commonly occur in particular breeds.

Benign melanocytes are often seen in Vassals, Miniature Schnauzers, Doberman Pinschers, Airedale Terriers, and Bay Retrievers, typically in animals between 5 and 11 years old. Malignant melanomas on the toe or in the toenail bed appear more frequently in black dogs. Schnauzers and Scottish Terriers are at the greatest risk.

Squamous cell carcinomas tend to appear in dogs that are between six and 10 years old. Breeds that are more likely to get this type of skin cancer include Keeshonds, Standard Schnauzers, Basset Hounds, Collies, Dalmatians, Bull Terriers, and Beagles. In general, dogs with short coats (especially those with light skin) are more prone to squamous cell carcinomas.

Mast cell tumors are most commonly seen in Boxers and pugs, and are also found with some frequency in Boston Terriers, Labrador Retrievers, Beagles, and Schnauzers.

Signs and Symptoms: How to Spot Skin Cancer in Dogs
Dog skin cancer symptoms depend on the type of cancer it is and where the tumor is located on your dog’s body.

Melanomas. Benign melanocytosis may range in size from very small to more than 2.5 inches in diameter. They appear on areas of the skin covered with hair and maybe black, brown, gray, or red in color. Malignant dog melanomas tend to occur in the mouth, on the lips, and in the toenail beds, and pads of the feet. When dog melanomas occur in the feet, they often become infected, leading to misdiagnosis as a simple infection.

Squamous cell carcinomas. These tumors are firm and raised with a wart-like appearance. They often occur on the abdomen and around the ge****ls. When they occur on the feet, they may be painful and cause your dog to limp.

Mast cell tumors. These skin cancers in dogs are typically slow-growing and rubber-like. More aggressive mast cell tumors grow faster and may ulcerate, leading to the development of sore, inflamed areas on the dog’s body. Mast cell tumors most commonly occur on the trunk of the body, though they are found on the legs about 25% of the time.

Treatment Options for Dog Skin Cancer
The treatment depends upon the type of tumor and its location.

Surgery is often the first step for malignant melanomas. If the melanoma cannot be removed entirely or has spread to nearby lymph nodes, radiation is commonly used. The cancer may go into remission nearly 70% of the time in these situations, though recurrence is common. Chemotherapy is often used in combination with surgery and/or radiation therapy. There is also a vaccine that causes the dog’s own immune system to attack tumor cells, which often successfully extends the survival time of dogs with oral melanoma.

Squamous cell carcinomas can often be removed surgically, with no need for radiation or chemotherapy. If the tumors occur in inoperable locations, photodynamic therapy and the use of a drug called piroxicam may be beneficial.

Dog mast cell tumors are best treated by surgical removal with or without radiation therapy, depending on the size and location of the skin cancer. Based on the grade of the cancer and the degree to which it has spread, chemotherapy and/or steroids may be used, as w

What is toad poisoning?
Toad poisoning occurs when a dog is exposed to toxins secreted by certain species of toads. exposure to most toads causes only mild signs with licking or ingesting most toads resulting in drooling, vomiting and oral irritation.

What causes toad poisoning?
Toads secrete toxic substances through glands on their skin. These substances are secreted in higher amounts when the toad feels threatened. When a toad is licked or eaten, absorption of these toxic substances through the mouth, open wounds or other mucous membranes results in poisoning. Toads are poisonous at all stages of life, including the tadpoles and eggs. Even drinking water from a bowl in which a toad was sitting or pond water containing eggs can result in poisoning.

What are the clinical signs of toad poisoning?
Within minutes of licking or ingesting a toad, drooling and frothing at the mouth occur. The gums may become very red and signs of pain, including pawing at the mouth or vocalizing, may be seen. Vomiting and diarrhea are common. Signs typically progress rapidly to include stumbling, tremors, seizures, abnormal eye movements, difficulty breathing, increased or decreased heart rate and abnormal heart rhythms. Without rapid treatment, death may occur.

How is toad poisoning diagnosed?
Most cases of toad poisoning in dogs are diagnosed when a pet has the expected signs and a known or suspected exposure to poisonous toads. No specific test is available to confirm toad poisoning. Blood work, radiographs (x-rays) of the chest or abdomen and ECG may be helpful to determine the severity of poisoning and necessary supportive care.

How is toad poisoning treated?
One of the most important treatments for toad poisoning is immediate flushing of the mouth with large amounts of running water. This decreases the amount of poison absorbed and the severity of signs. A garden hose or sink sprayer can be used. If the hose has been out in the sun, assure water is cool prior to rinsing. Aim the hose or sprayer forward, pointing out of the dog's mouth. Try to point the dog's head downward to decrease the chances of water being swallowed or inhaled. Make sure to rinse the mouth, face, and eyes thoroughly.

Further treatment will vary depending upon the signs that develop. Intravenous fluids, anti-nausea medications, medications to control the heart rate, muscle relaxants, medications to control seizures and medications to treat abnormal heart rhythms may be necessary. A medication, Digi bind, that specifically reverses the effects on the heart may be considered in severe cases. Administration of intravenous lipid (fat) solution can also be considered to treat the effects of toad poisoning. Surgery or endoscopy may be necessary to remove ingested toads.

What is the prognosis for toad poisoning?
The outcome depends upon the species of toad, geographic location of exposure and how rapidly care is provided. Quick decontamination and treatment are necessary for a good outcome. Severe poisoning is more likely in Florida, where death is common if immediate care is not provided. No long-term effects are expected if the dog survives the initial poisoning.

What kinds of cancer are most common in dogs?

Cancer can take many forms and can affect the blood, bone, or body tissues. An accurate diagnosis is critical to provide the most appropriate treatment and the best prognosis. Dogs fall victim to the following types of canine cancers:
Lymphoma is one of the most common cancers seen in dogs, accounting for 20% of all canine cancers. Dogs are two- to five-times more likely than people to develop lymphoma, which can affect any breed at any age. Lymphoma appears most often as swollen lymph nodes under the jaw, in front of the shoulders, or behind the knees. Occasionally, lymphoma may attack lymph nodes in the chest or abdomen, which makes breathing difficult or causes vomiting and diarrhea. Lymphoma is generally considered treatable, depending on the type, and multidrug chemotherapy gives favorable results. Dogs who respond well to chemotherapy usually enjoy a good quality of life for the next 12 to 18 months of remission.

Most commonly affected breed: golden retrievers

Mast cell tumors typically form on the skin, can vary from relatively benign to extremely aggressive, and often spread to other parts of the body. Mast cells are immune cells associated with allergies and usually are easily identified with a fine-needle aspirate. A pet suffering from a mast cell tumor often will show signs of vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. Surgery is required to excise the entire mast cell tumor. Often, chemotherapy and radiation therapy are also indicated for severe grades of tumor.

Most commonly affected breeds: boxers and bulldogs
Osteosarcoma is the most common bone cancer in dogs, occurring most frequently in large and giant breeds. Osteosarcoma routinely attacks the long bones in the limbs—but can affect any bone—and progresses rapidly, spreading to the lungs, lymph nodes, and other bones. Pet owners notice swelling, lameness, or pain in the affected limb in the beginning stages. Since this disease is so aggressive and spreads extremely rapidly, the recommended course of treatment often is amputation of the affected limb followed by chemotherapy to treat metastases. Sadly, fewer than 10% of dogs who undergo this gold-standard treatment live longer than three years.

Most commonly affected breeds: Great Danes, Irish wolfhounds, mastiffs

Melanoma is one of the most common oral cancers seen in dogs and frequently is seen in breeds with dark tongues and gums. These tumors are composed of darkly pigmented cells and can be found anywhere on the body. A malignant melanoma that develops in the oral cavity often has spread throughout the body by the time it’s first noticed and, unfortunately, is incurable. Complete surgical removal is difficult, radiation therapy is ineffective against metastasized cells, and chemotherapy is ineffective against this type of cancer. Melanoma appears to respond to immune-based therapies and several treatments are under development.

Most commonly affected breeds: Doberman pinschers, standard and miniature schnauzers, chow chows, and Scottish terriers

Mammary gland carcinomas are the most common tumors in unspayed female dogs, but often are overlooked since they usually appear as small nodules around the ni**le. Unfortunately, the nodule may quickly grow into a large, painful tumor that can ulcerate and become an open wound. Approximately 50% of these tumors are malignant, but they can be cured with surgical removal if the cancer has not metastasized. Fifty percent of malignant masses will be fatal. Spaying a dog before her first heat cycle significantly decreases the mammary cancer risk.

Most commonly affected breeds: older, unspayed females of every breed
Hemangiosarcoma is a form of cancer that develops from cells that line the blood vessels, most commonly attacking the spleen but also the liver, heart, and skin. Dogs with splenic tumors seldom display signs of illness until the tumor ruptures and they go into shock caused by extreme blood loss, with pale gums, sudden weakness, and labored breathing. Emergency surgery is required to stem the blood loss, followed by chemotherapy. Sadly, this disease rarely gives warning signals until it has progressed into the later stages and treatment often is too late.

Most commonly affected breeds: golden retrievers, German shepherds, Portuguese water dogs, Skye terriers

What signs should I watch for?
As with any disease, early detection is critical for the best outcome. Keep an eye out for these early warning signs of cancer in your dog:
Abnormal or rapidly growing swellings
Sores that do not heal
Loss of appetite and weight loss
Bleeding or discharge from body openings
Difficulty eating, swallowing, or breathing
Lameness

What is obesity?
Obesity is an accumulation of excess body fat. Extra body weight and extra body fat tend to go hand in hand, so most overweight dogs will have excess body fat.

Bodyweight is easy to measure when assessing if a dog is overweight or obese – easier than trying to measure body fat. Using body weight as a guide, dogs are considered to be overweight when they weigh 10-20% above their ideal body weight. They are considered obese when they weigh 20% or more above their ideal body weight.

What are the risks of obesity?
Obesity shortens a dog’s life and makes them more likely to develop the disease. It was always accepted that heavy dogs lived a shorter lifespan than lean dogs, usually by 6-12 months. But a large, lifetime study of Labrador Retrievers has found that being even moderately overweight can reduce a dog's life expectancy by nearly two years compared to their leaner counterparts. This is a sobering statistic.

Previously, fat was considered to be relatively inactive tissue, simply storing excess energy calories and adding to body mass. However, scientific evidence now reveals that fat tissue is biologically active. It secretes inflammatory hormones and creates oxidative stress on the body’s tissue, both of which contribute to many diseases. A new approach is thinking of obesity as a chronic, low-level inflammatory condition.

Obese dogs develop an increased risk for:

1 many types of cancer, diabetes mellitus, heart disease, and hypertension
2 osteoarthritis and faster degeneration of affected joints
3 urinary bladder stones
3 anesthetic complications as they are less heat tolerant

On the other hand, obesity may be an indicator of the diseases, such as hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid gland) or Cushing’s disease (overactive adrenal glands).

29/01/2022

What is epilepsy?

Primary epilepsy in pets is caused by an abnormality in the transmission of nerve impulses from the frontal lobe, similar to an electrical leak in the brain, resulting in seizures in the sick animal.

What is the cause?

It is caused by genetic abnormalities that result in abnormality in the transmission of nerve impulses in the brain. Because it is an abnormal trait that can be transmitted genetically. Therefore, it was found that pets with epilepsy often have relatives in the family who have such problems as well.

Who is the risk group?

Epilepsy is more common in pure breed or pure breed groups. It is more common in dogs than cats. Sick animals can begin showing their first seizures from 6 months to 6 years of age. Dog breeds at risk for epilepsy include beagles, pomeranians, French Bulldog Poodle Golden Retriever Labrador Retriever German Chef.

Which one is called a seizure? The seizures that pets exhibit can range from partial seizures such as facial twitching, twitching of the mouth, or leg twitching, but the sick animal has a good sense of the environment. Until a generalized seizure (generalized seizure) may be found that the neck is raised. All four legs twitch or twitch, saliva foams at the mouth, and may experience unconscious urination and defecation.

Regarding treatment…

The current treatment for epilepsy relies heavily on medication. The veterinarian will determine the appropriate use of anticonvulsant medication for the animal. The response to anticonvulsants in each pet will be different. Some people may give only one type of anticonvulsant medication to stop the seizures. In some cases, a combination of anticonvulsants may be needed to stop the seizures that occur. However, the use of anticonvulsants only reduces the frequency of seizures that will occur. There may be some seizures and the veterinarian will consider the use of an anticonvulsant. taking into account the ability to suppress seizures of each drug The frequency of seizures in sick animals Including side effects from medication that may occur along with periodic follow-up appointments in order to adjust the dose to the appropriate level.

How would I know if my pet has diabetes?
There are some clinical signs, or symptoms, you may notice at home. Extreme thirst and urination are definitely something to let your veterinarian know about. There are several reasons for this to happen and diabetes is one of them. A pet that is always hungry can also be a warning sign. Since the body is not using glucose properly it feels hungry. Losing weight is also a red flag. Sudden, extreme weight loss without a decreased appetite can indicate diabetes.

Here's a good info-graphic from Vetsulin to see if your pet is experiencing symptoms of diabetes.
