I was interviewed by Lianhe Zaobao 联合早报 regarding burnout prevention.
As a startup founder and a mental health counsellor, I am familiar with work burnout and compassion fatigue. Self care is a deliberate effort I made. Though I have to work through feeling of guilt, I know self care is critical for everyone's benefits beside me, including my clients and my colleagues.
Facing work demands and self care needs, choosing one over the other has not always been easy. Having a supportive system at workplace, including effective Employee Assistance Program (EAP), has proven to be effective in burnout prevention and bearing higher work productivity.
Having restriction after-work hours communication will go a long way in respecting employees need for self care too. However, 70% managers and employers fear work productivity being negatively impacted should communication after work be totally restricted.
When sharing with #联合早报, Singapore's mainstream Chinese newspaper, I highlighted the need for employers and leaders to look after their mental health too. Studies have shown that the mental health of parents can affect their children, and the mental health of managers can also have an impact on employees.
