This morning, my co-trainer Sek Jen (in yellow) conducted a session for 50 children’s ministry helpers from Victory Family Centre. We are thankful for the strong passion that their Kids Ministry Director Reen (pic 3 taking the wefie) has in equipping her volunteers in the area of understanding children with Adhd, ASD and special educational needs. Churches welcome children and teens from the whole age range who are from different backgrounds. It is to be expected that quite a number of children will be found to display needs and challenges. It’s so important that church ministry volunteers invest in increasing their understanding and approaches in supporting such children and teens and their parents. If you are part of a church that would like to be trained in this area, do DM us! Shed Training and Consultancy.

Had a lovely time connecting with parents at a Coffee Session for new parents organized by .eip at their Parkway branch. From parents of 3 year olds to those with tweens and teens, navigating the process of “what needs does my child actually have?” can be a really confusing and exasperating process. Many of these parents are observing issues, but either due to the age of the child or the level of needs, they are not getting specific answers from medical specialists. But I’m glad they are proactively supporting their children by accessing early intervention thru Olive Tree’s comprehensive menu of classes! Being a parent myself, I’m really happy to help others sense-make their journey better, so they leave feeling less lost, and with some directions and encouragement. And interestingly, the main need we were discussing was Adhd. And ASD too.

Attention parents of Inattentive, Hyperactive, Impulsive children/teens

Do you find yourself repeating instructions constantly to your child, getting frustrated as they struggle to maintain focus on their school work and observing them act impulsively when triggered?

Inattentive, hyperactive and impulsive behaviours can be exhausting on parents to manage on a daily basis. Add that to juggling family and work life, and the guilt we feel when things at home are not going smoothly. Parents, managing children with needs and challenges does not have to be confusing and lonely.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that follows a child and teen throughout their lifespan.

Join other parents as we cover these topics:
1. Basics of understanding ADHD
2. What parents truly wish for your child/teen
3. Strategies for parenting them effectively
4. Bringing out the best in each child/teen

Dates: 5, 7, 12, 14 Aug, 9.00am to 11.00am ONLINE.

This 4-session small group parent training and support session has benefitted 150 parents to date. It is the first step to parents learning to support their children with attention issues more strategically.
Note: Having a diagnosis of ADHD for your child/teen is not a requirement.

I was very grateful for the opportunity to co-train with DAS Academy Head, this Monday. We were at NUS and it was so heartening to see around 60 academics and staff gather on a Mon morning to learn about how Universal Design Learning can support students with diverse needs at a University level. This was organised by the NUS Student Accessibility Unit to equip their lecturers and staff with better understanding and strategies that consider the varied educational needs of learners. It’s so important for higher education institutions to consider the students in their midst who have hidden needs. Really proud of NUS, both June and my alma mater, for prioritising such a training session!

On Tues I was so excited to support the E7 Cluster of Schools in their first Parent Peer Support Group meeting! Big thanks to the Cluster team of VPs and HODs who helped lead this initiative while activating parents via their PSGs to reach other parents. The parents who came connected with one another readily, sharing their stories and experiences and offering encouragement and ideas to one another. There was so much empathy and compassion in the room, it was pulpable! This is part of a P4P initiative that began with my volunteer role in COMPASS MOE. If you want to find out how to start this in your school or cluster, do reach out to me!

Went to share with the S1 Cluster of SEN Officers on Parents-4-Parents initative together w this morning. So glad for SEN Officers who are so committed to support their students with special educational needs! And also engage their parents as well. We shared about how schools and PSGs can work together to create parent peer support groups for their parents within the cluster or school by school.
