Joy ≠ Happiness — Let’s Talk About It
We hear 'joy' and 'happy' used like they’re the same thing. But they’re not.

Happiness is like a spark ✨— it lights up when something cool happens.
Joy is more like a glow 🌟— it stays, even when things get tough.

🧠 Happiness = a good mood
🍕 Pizza, memes, winning a game = happy vibes.

💛 Joy = deep meaning
👥 Feeling seen, doing what matters, connecting with people you love = joy.

Therapist Katherine Atherton says:
“Joy is bigger than me… it requires meaningful and deep connections with those I love.”

So, if you’re finding joy, don’t just ask:
“What makes me smile?”

Ask:
“What makes me feel alive?”
“What makes me feel like I belong?”

Let’s stop mixing up joy and happiness.
Let’s start defining joy for ourselves. 🌈

We all need someone to listen — when we’re lost, overwhelmed, or just having one of those days.

At OTR Listens, we’re here for you. No judgment — just real people who care and are ready to listen.

Everyone's got opinions about your future right now. Most of them are based on their fears, not your reality:
'That field has no jobs' = 'I don't understand it, and that scares me.'
'You need to decide NOW' = 'Your uncertainty makes me anxious.'
'What if you choose wrong?' = 'I'm afraid you'll struggle, and I can't fix it.'

These come from care. But care doesn't equal truth.

Here's what's actually true:
You don't need everything figured out. You can choose with limited information and adjust later. That's not failure - that's how life works.

Not knowing what you want yet? Normal. Choosing something risky because it interests you? Valid. Changing your mind later? Also fine.

Their fears are about THEIR comfort, not your capability.
Listen to their concerns. Then, decide for yourself.

What's one fear about your future that isn't actually yours?

Group chats these days likely have:
Everyone spiraling together, or
Everyone pretending they're fine

And sometimes you just need to say how you're actually feeling without:
→ Making your friends more anxious
→ Worrying your parents
→ Getting advice you didn't ask for
→ Having to perform 'I'm handling it'

That's what our listeners are trained for. Not to fix it. Not to tell you what to do. Just to listen while you figure out what you're feeling.

It's text-based, so you can do it from anywhere - your room, library, bus ride home. It's anonymous, so you don't have to worry about it affecting anything. It's free, because support shouldn't depend on whether you can afford it.

Late November hits different - it's not just YOUR stress, it's everyone else's coming at you too.

Your nervous system picks up other people's emotions before you even realize it. Friend panicking? Your body registers that panic. Parent anxious about your future? Your system reads 'threat' - even if you weren't worried two minutes ago.
This isn't weakness. It's biology.

The problem: When you absorb everyone's anxiety, you lose track of what YOU're actually feeling. You start carrying their stress on top of your own.

What helps: Pause and ask yourself: 'If they weren't panicking, would I be worried about this?'
If no → that's their anxiety, not yours. You can care without carrying it.
If yes → okay, this is actually your concern too. Address it from there.
You're allowed to stay calm when others aren't. That's not cold - it's self-preservation.

How do you handle other people's stress right now?"

Our listeners are non-judgmental, kind, and caring.

You asked. We answered.

These aren’t textbook replies. They’re real talk from youth wellness advocates who get it—the overthinking, the self-doubt, the late-night spirals.

😌 Because self-worth isn’t just a concept. It’s something you wrestle with, reclaim, and relearn.

Save this for the days you’re questioning everything.

Share it with someone who needs a reminder that they’re not broken, they’re just becoming 🌈

When everything feels “too much,” try slowing down instead of pushing harder. Here are a few ways to ground yourself and find peace in the moment.
1. Take a break and cool down.
2. Pause and check-in: What is one thing I can control now?
3. Take slow down breathes.
4. Stretch or play my favourite sport or activity!
5. Reflect on the situation once I’ve cooled down.
And tell yourself that you are allowed to be overwhelmed!

Need to talk it out? Find Avie on OTR Listens — our free, confidential text chat line here to listen whenever you need. Link in bio!
