Did you know that 10 September is World Su***de Prevention Day?

Today, allow me to break down misconceptions surrounding su***de. Knowledge is our most powerful tool in saving lives.

🚫 Myth 1: "People who talk about su***de are seeking attention." ❌

Reality: Many individuals who express suicidal thoughts are in genuine distress. It's crucial to take every mention seriously and offer support.

🚫 Myth 2: "Su***de only affects those with mental illness." ❌

Reality: Suicidal thoughts can impact anyone, regardless of their mental health history. It's a complex issue influenced by various factors.

🚫 Myth 3: "Talking about su***de can encourage it." ❌

Reality: Open conversations about su***de promote understanding and help-seeking. Silence, on the other hand, can perpetuate the stigma.

Reach out to friends and loved ones, check in, and listen without judgment.

Educate ourselves about the signs of su***de and available resources. Awareness can save lives.

πŸ’š Together, I hope we can erase the stigma and make seeking help a sign of strength, not shame.

πŸ“ž If you or someone you know is struggling, please seek professional assistance. You are never alone.

As a counsellor who continues to have the privilege of working with individuals battling life's challenges, it is crucial that we remember the power of compassion and connection .

Every individual we encounter is engaged in their personal battle with inner demons, silently fighting battles known only to them; often concealed behind smiles and seemingly ordinary lives. It is easy to overlook the struggles that others might be going through, especially in a society that tends to prioritize achievements and appearances.

We may not have all the answers or solutions to the problems our loved ones and friends face, but we can offer them the invaluable gift of support and understanding. By creating an environment where people feel safe to open up, we allow them to share their burdens, and that alone can bring immense relief. A simple act of checking in on a friend, a family member, or even a colleague can make a world of difference.

I urge you all to pause, reflect, and ask yourselves: Who in my life might benefit from a kind word, a heartfelt conversation, or a simple check-in today? Remember, it's not about solving their problems but about letting them know they are not alone in their struggles.

Question: "How do I open up to a therapist about difficult & sensitive issues?"

πŸ—¨You may think that your therapist would judge, don't understand or be disgusted with whatever you are going through.

βœ…οΈ No. We don't judge the data you give, at all (I'm referring to most trained professionals). Well you may notice that I have certain reactions to what you say and I want you to know that those reactions come from a place of curiosity and unconditional regards. In my past 9 years of working in the psychotherapy/ counselling field, I have the privilege of journeying to countless and various types of human experiences- never once I had to let a client go just because the data didn't sit well with me.

So how do you open up to a therapist about difficult topics? Gradually. Writing down what you wish to talk about on a piece of paper before the session can be helpful as a guide, or use that to show your therapist works too.

Having difficulties saying "no" to people often comes from a place where stable and secure relationships are absent. The idea of a healthy relationship with anyone (friends, co-workers, lovers, family) is challenging as one was never really shown how to have one.

How you coping today?

Some coping thoughts you can use if things have been rough:

1. Just because I keep thinking about it, doesn't mean it's gonna happen or that it's true.

2. It's okay to be feeling awful and still be doing things like going to work or school.

3. I'm feeling horrible but this feeling will not last forever just like any other feelings.

4. It's a terrible day so I need to be extra gentle and kind to myself.

What are some coping thoughts you use?
