If this scenario sounds familiar, you might be experiencing a cognitive distortion known as "Personalization." It occurs when we unjustly blame ourselves or feel guilty for things beyond our control.

Another prevalent distortion is "Should-thinking," which impacts how we view ourselves and others. For instance, phrases like "I should lose weight" or "She should have thanked me" lead to self-inflicted guilt or resentment.

These negative thinking patterns hinder our well-being. Schemas are patterns of thinking, feeling, or sensations that arise from childhood experience. They are our brain’s way of trying to understand what the “rules” of relationships were so that we could anticipate and react as needed.

Emotional deprivation schema is one schema that arises from childhood emotional neglect. As adults, people with this schema may be surrounded by more emotionally-giving people who can give them the warmth they crave, yet they still feel invisible and remain unable to express themselves emotionally.

A variety of behaviours can be associated with this schema. Examples include choosing ungiving partners who perpetuate the schema, being demanding and angry when needs are unmet, or showing excessive neediness. Swipe to learn more about this schema and head on to our website for more information!
