Did you know that 10 October is World Mental Health Day? 🧐

This year’s theme is “It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace”💼

Some of us might have just started working and this transition from schooling to working can be quite a challenging one. Everything is so new and different from what we were used to in school and adjusting to working full-time can be quite the struggle. While it is normal to feel a little overwhelmed and intimidated during this initial phase, it is important for us to pay attention to our feelings and not neglect our mental health 💛

Work can affect mental health, and mental health can also affect us at work. Stress may be an inevitable feeling for us we just start working. Hence, it is important to find ways to help us cope with the stress, whether by exercising, watching our favourite TV shows or hanging out with friends. When we are mindful in taking steps to care for our mental health, the better we can show up not only at work but other aspects of our life too 😊

✍️ Share with us in the comments how you cope with workplace stress!

Sometimes, we engage in addictive behaviours in order to avoid problems we face or negative feelings we experience.

However, negative feelings are a part of life and cannot be avoided. When we turn to our addictions instead of dealing with the negative feelings, we may end up hurting ourselves and others even more.

DBT skills are common for addiction treatment, as they teach us how to tolerate painful feelings when we can’t make things better right away. Here are some of the skills that you can use when you feel like engaging in an addictive behaviour!

We all have our needs in a relationship and we should not feel guilty about having them. We even have a right to ask for the things we need.

In fact, it is our responsibility to communicate our needs to the other person because we cannot assume they know what we need or how we are feeling otherwise.

However, we have to be sensitive and considerate to the other person when we are communicating our needs.

We need to remember that we have to give to get, and that we cannot simply demand for our needs to be met.

This means recognising that there may be valid reasons why a person may not meet our needs in a specific way or during a particular period of time. Being open to understanding the other person’s perspective and compromising is also extremely important so that we can balance our own needs and the needs of the other person.

Ultimately, learning how to communicate our needs well can not only help us to honour those needs, but also build deeper and caring connections with the other person 😊
