The "Lift and Lower" on reformer is a masterpiece of pelvic stability and eccentric control. A leg exercise in disguise, but it’s a great challenge for core stability.

✅
Maintain imprinted spine, rib cage and tailbone stays heavy on the mat, maintain lumbar-pelvic connection, engage the mid-stance, movement driven by the hips, controlled lifting of legs, resist the pulling of straps with hamstrings and glutes

❌
Overarching, abdomen popping out, leading movement with the feet, lowering your legs too much, lifting the glutes as you return, uncontrolled return, tensed shoulders and neck

Here's Elaine guiding us how to look out for the common mistakes while doing Lift and Lower!

Back Splits on reformer is an ultimate test of lower body control and pelvic stability. And as with all exercises, it's important we build a strong foundation first with a prep, and gradually move towards performing the actual exercise.

The Prep (Support & Alignment):
With hands stay grounded on the shoulder rest, this extra point of contact allows focus purely on maintaining a square, level pelvis and a slightly extended spine while the front knee extends and bends. It’s about finding the eccentric control of the hip flexors without the worrying of falling.

Actual Back Splits (The Balance Challenge):
Once familiarised with the alignment, the hands come off. With arms out, the base of support decreases. Hence the core and standing leg have to work extra harder to keep you steady as the carriage moves. The movement remains the same—extending and bending that front knee—but the challenge to your equilibrium is dialed way up.

Follow along as Elaine guides us through the different variations of this highly controlled exercise.

What's the difference, you asked?

• Comprehensive Science Foundation: Goes beyond basic anatomy by merging functional movement, biomechanics, and exercise physiology.
• Essential Program Prerequisite: Meets the anatomy requirements for Intensive (IMP, IR, ICCB) tracks and serves as a core component of the CMR course.
• Universal Professional Appeal: Tailored for a diverse range of experts, including Pilates teachers, physios, and sports coaches.
• Modern Methodology: Built on the STOTT PILATES® Movement System within a contemporary, evidence-based framework.
• Interactive Learning: Features a blend of theoretical lectures and practical, collaborative problem-solving.

The Push-Thru with Feet on the Cadillac is a STOTT PILATES® exercise designed to enhance segmental spinal mobility while simultaneously lengthening the posterior chain. This movement emphasises the importance of a sequential roll-up and roll-down, utilizing the spring’s resistance to assist in decompressing the lumbar spine. By prioritizing a "bead-by-bead" articulation, practitioners can achieve a deeper connection to the local stabilizers of the core, facilitating a functional balance between abdominal strength and hamstring flexibility.

Let us welcome Elaine!

Elaine’s journey started with simple curiosity and a search for a sustainable way to stay fit. What she found was a low-impact, high-reward practice that changed everything. For Elaine, Pilates wasn’t just about the workout—it was about the focus, alignment, and mindful breathing that eventually turned into total body awareness.

Now, she’s taking that passion to the next level; after falling in love with the way Pilates made her move and feel, Elaine completed her STOTT PILATES® training to help you find that same confidence and strength.

Same move, different mood. 🐸✨

The "Frog Lying Flat" on Stability Chair™ is a staple for adductor and pelvic floor integration, and the transition from a single pedal to split pedals significantly elevates neuromuscular demand.

The Single Pedal: This is the actual, foundational variation that focuses on bilateral symmetry, finding that deep connection to the adductors, and learning to resist the spring without tucking the pelvis — an ideal environment for building foundational strength and spinal alignment.

The Split Pedals: By unlinking the pedals, muscular imbalance and pelvic shift may be observed. Rotational challenge is introduced, and it forces the obliques and deep stabilisers to work harder to prevent pelvic rotation and ensure the pedals move in a synchronized plane. It is a great way to correct dominant-side compensation, and improving pelvic stability.

Following along as Adeline guides how through how each variation of Frog Lying Flat is performed, ribbit!

Finding that perfect balance of strength and control on the Stability Chair™ is no small feat—especially when you take one hand off the pedal, just like the One Arm Push Prone.

This exercise not only challenges your obliques to keep the torso parallel to the floor, it also works on scapular stability as you press down into the pedal and return.

Follow along as Adeline guides us through on how to accurately perform this "functional challenge".

The Mermaid Kneeling on the Stability Chair is a beautiful, functional exercise that focuses on lateral flexion (side bending) while challenging your core and shoulder stability. By pressing against the pedal resistance, we aren't just stretching—we're building functional strength in that side-body arch. Feel the stretch, find the control.

Follow along as Adeline guides us to perform the exercise accurately while highlighting some of the common mistakes.

From competitive floorball and swimming to a repetitive work-home-sleep cycle, Adeline’s active life hit pause after the long hours of a research lab job.

It took a friend's nudge and a trial class, but that first Pilates session was a game-changer for Adeline. One class a week quickly turned into three—a much-needed sanctuary from the daily grind. She soon discovered that mindful movement is about so much more than reps; it’s about deep engagement and surprising challenge.

This realization led Adeline to dive deep into the STOTT PILATES® Teacher Training. What started as self-improvement became a genuine passion and a desire to help others and even her own parents to experience the profound benefits of Pilates.

Do say hi when you see her around in the studio!
