The Mermaid Kneeling on the Stability Chair is a beautiful, functional exercise that focuses on lateral flexion (side bending) while challenging your core and shoulder stability. By pressing against the pedal resistance, we aren't just stretching—we're building functional strength in that side-body arch. Feel the stretch, find the control.

From competitive floorball and swimming to a repetitive work-home-sleep cycle, Adeline’s active life hit pause after the long hours of a research lab job.

​It took a friend's nudge and a trial class, but that first Pilates session was a game-changer for Adeline. One class a week quickly turned into three—a much-needed sanctuary from the daily grind. She soon discovered that mindful movement is about so much more than reps; it’s about deep engagement and surprising challenge.

​This realization led Adeline to dive deep into the STOTT PILATES® Teacher Training. What started as self-improvement became a genuine passion and a desire to help others and even her own parents to experience the profound benefits of Pilates.

The Side Arm Preps are foundational exercises designed to improve scapular stability and trunk stabilisation in the lateral plane, which is essential for many intermediate and advanced Pilates movements. It primarily focuses on training the stabilising muscles around the shoulder blade while maintaining a stable torso.

​Sitting

​The Sitting variation is considered the starting point for mastering the exercise.

​Setup: Begin seated on the mat, typically in a cross-legged or other stable seated position with a neutral spine (or a similar modification based on client need). One hand is placed on the side of the head, and the other arm is extended long, palm down.

​Movement: Maintain a stable, upright torso as you smoothly move the extended arm through a controlled range of motion.

​Focus: This variation emphasises keeping the scapula stabilised on the back ribcage while the arm moves, preventing the shoulder from shrugging or protracting. It also reinforces neutral spine alignment while seated.

​Kneeling

​The Kneeling variation is the more advanced form, integrating greater core and hip stabilisation demands, aligning with the STOTT PILATES® progression.

​Setup: Start in a tall kneeling position with the hips extended, maintaining a neutral pelvis and spine. This requires active engagement of the glutes and core muscles. The arm positioning is the same as the sitting prep (one hand behind the head, the other arm extended).

​Movement: Perform the same controlled arm movements as in the sitting prep.

​Focus: The movement challenges the entire trunk and hip musculature to provide greater stability against the moving arm. Maintaining the tall kneeling position without swaying or losing the neutral spine significantly increases the demand for core control and balance, making it the true progression of this preparatory exercise.

Colleen began her professional life working in market research, where she honed strong analytical and observational skills. However, her career path took a turn when she decided to take a career break to focus on family planning.

​During this time, seeking to stay active, Colleen embraced intense HIIT workouts. Unfortunately, without proper guidance and supervision, this often led to frequent injuries. Her fitness journey shifted dramatically when she suffered a shoulder injury. While recovering, Colleen discovered Pilates.

​She was immediately amazed by how gentle, yet incredibly targeted Pilates felt, offering a stark contrast to her previous high-impact routine. Not only did it aid her recovery, but Pilates also proved to be an invaluable tool that helped her navigate her postpartum journey.

​Realizing the profound and practical benefits of the discipline, Colleen made the decision to become a certified Pilates instructor. Her goal is to spread the benefits of Pilates to others who, like her, may find it a useful and effective method to cope with the stresses and demands of everyday life.

The Swimming exercise is a classic Pilates move that challenges full-body coordination and endurance in the prone position. It emphasizes the balance between spinal extension and core control, building strength in the entire posterior chain. However, it is important to master the prep exercise first to ensure correct firing patterns and core stabilisation before attempting the actual exercise.

Prep

Starting on all fours (quadruped), make sure hands are directly under the shoulders; knees are directly under the hips with a neutral spine. This helps to establish scapular stability and neutral pelvis. Float one arm forward and the opposite leg back, reaching them away from the center of the body. Return and do the opposite arm and leg. This helps to strengthen the stabilising core muscles and develop limp dissociation.

Actual

Lie prone on the mat with head and upper chest lifted into slight extension, keeping the neck long. Arms and legs are all extended outwards, hovering off the mat. This initiates the stable trunk position that must be held against the rapid movement. Flutter kick the arms and legs simultaneously in a rapid, small range of motion, alternating between right arm/left leg and vice versa. This challenges coordination and muscle endurance.
