Dr Seshasai Sudarshan, Consultant, Cataract & Comprehensive Ophthalmology Department, SNEC, shared with Tamil Murasu that apart from cataracts, age-related macular degeneration and other conditions can also cause irreversible vision loss if not treated early.

With nearly 80% of Singaporeans who are over 60s showing signs of cataracts, he stressed that cataract surgery remains one of the safest and most common procedures worldwide, benefiting around 28 million patients annually. Dr Seshasai explained that removing the cloudy natural lens and replacing it with an artificial one prevents cataracts from recurring, although posterior capsular opacity may develop and can be easily treated with a simple laser.

At SNEC, patients benefit from phacoemulsification and a wide range of monofocal, multifocal, and toric lenses for personalised care and faster recovery. Dr Seshasai also advised regular exercise, a diet rich in antioxidants, UV-protective sunglasses, and the 20-20-20 rule to help delay cataract formation.

Reflecting on a year of growth and looking toward to the future, our CEO Prof Aung Tin delivered his New Year Address at today’s townhall, where he thanked staff for their contributions in 2025. Prof Aung Tin also shared his vision and centre-wide initiatives for 2026 to support patient care across clinical services, education, and research.

The event also highlighted excellence in service through the GratiService Team Awards. Organised by the Office of Patient Experience, these awards recognise teamwork and collective efforts in delivering seamless patient care.

In supporting staff well-being, our Medical Social Workers conduct Psychological First Aid training, equipping staff to be supportive peers to colleagues who may be experiencing distress. Complementing this, the TeamSPEAK workshop, organised by our Human Resource L&D team, raises awareness of speaking up for safety and to foster greater understanding of psychological safety in the workplace.

GratiService Team Awards Winners:
• Clinic 5CLVC – Overall Best Performing Team Award
• Clinic 3B – Best Team Award (Most Complimented)
• Clinic 1C – Best Team Award (Most Improved)
Congratulations to all our award winners!

In appreciation of everyone’s hard work, our senior leaders personally handed out yoghurt and coffee after the Townhall. Staff were also treated to lunch, games, and a fun photo booth session, rounding off the event on a joyful note.

👁️✨Introducing EySEE – Self Check Eye Test on the Health Buddy App!

EySEE is a new self-check eye test feature on the Health Buddy app, designed by SNEC to help you monitor your visual acuity (VA) and for you to submit your results before your appointment.

❓How it works:
Just like the clinic test, EySEE shows numbers or the letter “E” in different sizes and directions.
Cover one eye, follow the prompts, and select what you see.
The test gets harder as the text shrinks – just like a real VA test!

📲Find it on Health Buddy:
Go to Specialty Care > Eye Care > Self Check Eye Test

👥Who can use it?
EySEE is best suited for follow-up patients under 70 years old
It is available for all Health Buddy app users
Submission of test results is limited to SingHealth patients with SNEC follow-up appointments

💡Why EySEE?
It’s convenient, fast and helps you stay on top of your eye health between appointments.

Take control of your vision – anytime, anywhere.💙

🔬✨ What started as a Singapore health concern is now helping people improve their sight worldwide!

In conversation with Prof Jod Mehta, Executive Director of SERI, we learn how thinking local created global breakthroughs.

While international researchers overlooked myopia, SERI saw a growing concern in the 1990s. The approach was bold: focus on our people's needs, and the impact will ripple outward.

Today, SERI is a world leader in eye research.

🌟 What they've achieved:
➡️Pioneering myopia research and introducing Myopine (atropine) for the treatment of Myopia. It is now available in Singapore and several countries.
➡️Developed innovative surgical devices for corneal transplantation surgery.
➡️An AI algorithm that acts like a tireless first-pass screener for diabetic retinopathy.

The best part? When you get treated at SNEC, you might be benefiting from research that started in our own backyard.
