FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The people of Gbangbatoke are deeply concerned and unhappy with the current situation caused by excessive dust within the community. This problem has continued to affect daily life, health, education, and movement, especially around major junctions where people cannot sit or stand comfortably for long periods due to the heavy dust.
Residents are calling on companies operating in the area, the Local Council, and relevant authorities to urgently advocate for the people of Gbangbatoke, who are suffering silently. The dust situation has become unbearable, particularly during the dry season.
Of serious concern is the impact on school pupils, especially those in JSS and SSS, whose uniforms are white. Many pupils leave home clean in the morning, but before they reach school, their uniforms have already changed color because of the dust. This situation affects their dignity, confidence, and learning environment.
As young youths of Gbangbatoke, we are strongly advocating for the provision of a water bowser to regularly water the roads and ground in order to reduce dust. This simple intervention will greatly improve living conditions, protect health, and support education in our community.
We are therefore appealing to the Youth Council, Paramount Chief (PC), Section Chiefs, local authorities, business people, and development partners to come together and help resolve this issue. The people of Gbangbatoke deserve a clean, safe, and healthy environment.
Together, let us act now for the well-being of our community.

“Stop FBC First” – Zainab Sheriff Blames FBC for Student Deaths, Urges Action Against University

By: Abdulraman Bah

A leading youth advocate, Zainab Sheriff, has strongly criticized Fourah Bay College (FBC) over the growing number of reported student deaths, calling on authorities to urgently address what she describes as deep-rooted administrative and welfare failures within the institution.
Speaking during a recent engagement, Zainab Sheriff expressed serious concern about the safety, wellbeing, and living conditions of students at the university. She blamed the management of FBC for neglecting critical student welfare issues, which she believes have contributed to repeated tragic incidents involving students.
According to her, the slogan “Stop FBC First” reflects the urgent need for government, university authorities, and stakeholders to pause normal operations and focus on reforms that prioritize student lives. She stressed that education should never come at the cost of human life.
Zainab Sheriff called for a thorough investigation into the reported deaths, demanding accountability from the university administration. She also urged the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education, student unions, and civil society organizations to intervene decisively to prevent further loss of lives.
“The lives of students matter. We cannot continue to lose young people in the name of education,” she stated, emphasizing the need for improved healthcare access, better accommodation, mental health support, and stronger campus security.
Members of the public and student bodies have since reacted strongly to her comments, with many echoing her call for immediate reforms at Sierra Leone’s oldest university.
As pressure mounts, stakeholders are now looking to the relevant authorities to respond swiftly and transparently to restore confidence in the institution and ensure the safety of students.
