The Brave Heart team is wrapping up the task-shifting model in Funkia community. Over the past weeks, our Community Mental Health Champions have been delivering powerful sessions to young beneficiaries focusing on building life and social skills that prepare them for success.

These sessions go beyond just learning. They give young people the tools to manage challenges, resist negative influences, and make choices that protect their health and future. In communities like Funkia, where young people face daily pressures, these skills are more than lessons they are lifelines.

Brave Heart is committed to ensuring that no young person is left behind. With the right knowledge and support, they can grow into strong, resilient, and empowered individuals.

The Brave Heart team trained staff of the Land Administration Project on workplace mental health. The sessions focused on how to recognize stress, manage it in healthy ways, and build resilience while carrying out their daily tasks.
Strong mental health at work means better focus, higher productivity, and a healthier work environment. When staff understand how to care for their wellbeing, they are better prepared to handle challenges and perform at their best.
This training is part of the Brave Heart Project’s wider goal of promoting mental health beyond communities and into workplaces. By investing in people, we are helping to create not only healthier teams but also more efficient systems that benefit everyone.

Every weekend, the Brave Heart team visits slum communities to educate young people on the dangers of substance use, the importance of mental health, and the power of refusal skills. These sessions give them the knowledge and confidence to make better choices for their lives.
This weekend, we gathered young people in Funkia. Together, we explored how drugs can harm their future, why protecting their mental health matters, and how to build the strength to say no when faced with pressure. The excitement, openness, and active participation showed us how eager they are to learn and grow.
We believe that consistent education is the key to breaking cycles of harm and opening doors of opportunity. Each weekend session is a step toward safer, healthier, and more empowered communities.

Every weekend, the Brave Heart team visits slum communities to educate young people on the dangers of substance use, the importance of mental health, and the power of refusal skills. These sessions give them the knowledge and confidence to make better choices for their lives.
This weekend, we gathered young people in Cockle Bay. Together, we talked about how drugs affect their future, why mental health matters, and how to say no when faced with peer pressure. The energy, questions, and participation showed us just how ready they are to learn and grow.

Young people in slum communities face daily pressures that can put their health and future at risk. Bringing them together to learn about mental health and drug refusal skills gives them the tools to rise above these challenges.
When young people understand their mental health, they build confidence, develop life skills, and protect their future. Teaching drug refusal skills empowers them to say no to harmful substances and yes to brighter opportunities.
These sessions are much more than just lessons they are safe spaces where young people feel heard, gain confidence, and learn how to say no to drugs while choosing healthier paths.
Every conversation we have today helps prevent harm tomorrow. Together, we are building stronger, healthier communities’ one young person at a time.

In Funkia, young people gathered with our community mental health champions to learn why mental health matters in daily life. It was a safe space to listen, ask questions, and share experiences without judgment, reminding them that caring for the mind is as vital as caring for the body.

The sessions reminded them that protecting their minds is just as important as protecting their bodies, and that they have the power to make choices that lead to healthier and brighter futures.
This is the heart of the Brave Heart Project: bringing young people closer to knowledge, support, and hope.

This week, we officially began our first intervention activities with beneficiaries in Cockle Bay community. Our community mental health champions led the opening task shifting training sessions, giving young people their first introduction to the Brave Heart curriculum.

The sessions focused on building trust and creating a safe space where every participant felt heard, respected, and valued. From there, the team introduced the curriculum an evidence-based program that helps young people understand mental health, reduce stigma, resist peer pressure, prevent substance use, and strengthen their life skills.

The training also explained how the curriculum works. It consists of nine sessions using interactive activities such as stories, role plays, group discussions, and quizzes to make learning practical and engaging. These sessions are designed to give young people the knowledge and tools they need to make healthier decisions and support one another.

The Brave Heart Project is not only raising awareness but also building a foundation of knowledge and confidence among young people helping them take charge of their wellbeing and future.

Last weekend, our team visited Cockle Bay community to engage young people aged 10 to 24, our beneficiaries, by assessing their knowledge of mental health and substance use disorders.

This baseline assessment is a vital step in shaping a response that truly meets the needs of young people in that community.

Together, we’re building stronger, healthier communities by listening to the voices of those we serve.

Yesterday, the SRHIN-SL team met with the Technical Working Group to reflect on the successes and challenges of the Brave Heart Project so far. The meeting created space to review progress and strengthen the next steps of the project’s implementation.

A key focus of the discussions was the importance of government collaboration with relevant ministries and strong partnerships with NGOs. Members of the group shared ideas on how they can guide the project and support in building and sustaining these relationships.

Our team also highlighted the impact already being made in schools and communities through awareness, training, and baseline research. The Technical Working Group commended the efforts and shared advice on how to keep momentum while ensuring long-term impact.

The meeting ended on a very positive note, with a renewed sense of collaboration and commitment to making the Brave Heart Project a success for Sierra Leone’s young people

Today, our team had a productive meeting at the Ministry of Health with Mr. Ishmael Kebbie (Deputy Director, Mental Health & Non-Communicable Diseases) and Mr. Michael Alex Conteh (Senior Health Education Officer).

The discussions focused on aligning the Brave Heart Project with the Ministry’s priorities, particularly the School Health Programme, and exploring ways to strengthen our curriculum, research, and baseline assessments.

We are grateful for the valuable insights shared and look forward to continued collaboration in advancing mental health and substance use prevention for young people in Sierra Leone. 💙✨
