Exactly one week after His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio commissioned a 128-slice CT Scan machine and an ultra-modern burns unit at Connaught Hospital alongside new buses, mobile workshop vehicle, and utility vehicles in Bo City; the Government has continued to advance healthcare transformation across the country. Yesterday, Saturday 11th April 2026, the leadership of the Ministry of Health, led by Dr. Austin Demby officially unveiled a brand new Revolution CT scan machine with 64-slice capability and a modern 4D ultrasound machine at the Kenema Regional Government Hospital

The event also featured the official handing over of keys for one staff bus and one utility vehicle to the hospital’s management, aimed at improving mobility and operational efficiency for healthcare workers. The ceremony was witnessed by key stakeholders including the Deputy Minister of Basic Education, the Resident Minister, the Majority Leader of Parliament, the Mayor of Kenema City Council, civil society representatives, and other partners, demonstrating strong national commitment toward strengthening healthcare delivery.

The introduction of advanced diagnostic equipment is expected to significantly enhance the hospital’s capacity to diagnose and manage complex medical conditions. According to the Minister, these investments will benefit not only residents of Kenema but also patients from surrounding communities and neighbouring districts, reducing the need for referrals to distant facilities and improving timely access to specialized care.

Taking the Minister and delegation through the Radiology Department, Dr. Jay Kabba, a Government Radiologist Consultant, explained that the hospital now has trained and qualified personnel capable of operating the CT scan machine and accurately interpreting results. She further highlighted the wide range of diagnostic services the equipment will provide, noting that this development will significantly strengthen healthcare delivery and improve patient outcomes across the Eastern Region.

Accompanied by Paramount Chief Foday Momoh Ngulama and engineers from Uplink Construction, the team toured key units including maternity, surgical wards, theatre rooms, ICU, and other service areas, making critical observations and recommendations to improve design and functionality.

During the inspection, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr. med Mustapha Sundifu Kabba provided technical guidance, particularly within surgical wards and theatre rooms, recommending structural adjustments such as widening corridors and doorways to accommodate modern hospital equipment and improve patient movement. The Paramount Chief expressed appreciation to the Ministry for deploying young doctors to Moyamba Government Hospital, commending their dedication while also appealing for the expansion of private ward facilities to meet increasing demand.

In his remarks, the Honourable Minister of Health, Dr. Demby emphasized that the existing Moyamba Government Hospital will be upgraded to continue serving the district, while the new 100-bed facility will function as a specialized and teaching hospital for the Southern Region. Ministry of Health Commissions New Fleet to Strengthen Healthcare Delivery

The Ministry of Health has today marked a major milestone with the official commissioning of a new fleet of vehicles at Bo Government Hospital. The event was graced by His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio and his wife Madam Fatima Maada Bio, alongside the Honourable Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, senior government officials, and key stakeholders in the health sector.

This strategic investment includes 10 staff buses, 1 mobile workshop vehicle, 10 utility vehicles, and 450 motorbikes aimed at improving mobility for healthcare workers across Sierra Leone. The fleet will enhance daily staff movement, strengthen logistics and supervision, support maintenance services, and expand outreach, especially to hard-to-reach communities, thereby improving the efficiency and responsiveness of healthcare delivery.

Speaking at the ceremony, health sector leaders emphasized that mobility challenges have long affected timely service delivery, emergency response, and supportive supervision. This intervention represents a bold and practical solution to these constraints, enabling healthcare workers to deliver services more effectively and reach underserved populations.

Highlighting the importance of the initiative, Dr. Demby noted, “When health workers can get to work in time without too much hassle for transportation, they are able to work with freedom and peace of mind and ultimately save more lives.”

The commissioning reflects the Government’s strong commitment to building a resilient, people-centered health system, one that improves access to essential services, supports frontline workers, and contributes to reducing maternal and child mortality nationwide. Healthcare workers have welcomed the initiative and pledged to utilize the fleet efficiently to advance national health priorities.
