On Wednesday the 18th June, 2025. The Sickle Cell Carers Awareness Network (SCCAN) Kono, in partnership with the Partner in Health (PIH), conducted an impactful school sensitization program at both Islamic Secondary School and Experimental Secondary School. The objective of this initiative was to raise awareness among students about sickle cell disease, focusing on preventive measures and how young people can play a vital role in saving lives.
During the sensitization sessions, students were educated about the nature of sickle cell disease, its causes, symptoms, and key preventive strategies. Emphasis was placed on the importance of early screening, safe practices in marriage, and understanding their genetic background through blood tests. Participants learned that sickle cell is a hereditary condition, and early detection can significantly reduce the risk of severe complications.
A crucial part of the sensitization highlighted how young people can actively contribute to combating sickle cell disease. One of the most impactful messages was the encouragement for blood donation. Students were informed that donating blood is a simple and powerful way to save lives, especially for individuals suffering from sickle cell crises. Blood donations, they learned, can provide critical support during emergencies or treatment.
The event also involved interactive discussions and testimonies to motivate students to take action and spread awareness within their communities. The message emphasized that in supporting sickle cell patients, young people can foster a caring and informed society. The sensitization aimed to instill a sense of responsibility and empathy among the youth, empowering them to make a difference.
Overall, the sensitization successfully increased awareness on sickle cell disease and encouraged proactive participation among students. It is hoped that with continued education and community involvement, the fight against sickle cell disease will gain strength, ultimately saving more lives and improving the health and well-being of many in Kono and beyond.
