Using Data to Improve Child Health Outcomes

“We are looking at ways to ensure that the data is fed into the regular systems that the health system itself uses for decision making...” – Dr. Ikechukwu (Ike) Ogbuanu, Site Director, CHAMPS Sierra

At CHAMPS, we are proud to work closely with partners like WHO and UNICEF to translate life-saving data into real-world health decisions that help reduce child mortality. Together, we are making strides to uncover and understand the true causes of childhood deaths, ensuring every child counts.

Learning from Loss: How Child Death Reviews Are Empowering Frontline Nurses in Sierra Leone

In the heart of Sierra Leone's Makeni Regional Hospital, a quiet transformation is taking place; one rooted in reflection, shared learning, and hope. Through the Child Death Review (CDR) process, healthcare workers are gaining critical insights into the causes of child mortality, allowing them to respond with renewed knowledge and compassion. Christiana Sesay, a dedicated State Enrolled Community Health Nurse (SECHN) at the hospital’s pediatric ward, shared how the CDR has deepened her clinical understanding, particularly in diagnosing and managing malnourished children and strengthened her professional practice. “It’s not just about the medicine,” she said. “I’ve learned to be punctual, to communicate better, to document everything and to share what I’ve learned with my colleagues.”

For Christiana and many others, the CDR is more than a technical review; it’s a platform for growth and solidarity among health professionals navigating complex challenges with limited resources. “The CDR helps us see where things went wrong and how we can do better, together,” she explained. Despite systemic hurdles, the process fosters communication and collaboration between nurses and clinicians, turning each review into an opportunity to save lives. As Sierra Leone continues to battle high maternal and child mortality rates, initiatives like the CDR provide a human-centered, locally-driven path forward—where each story of loss informs a future of prevention.
