Data-Driven Reviews Boost Child Survival as Sierra Leone Clinicians Sharpen Lifesaving Skills

Child Death Review (CDR) is emerging as a key force in improving child survival in Sierra Leone, generating reliable data that explains why children die and guiding solutions to prevent future deaths. The platform is also transforming the skills of frontline health workers, creating a space for learning, sharing experiences, and strengthening clinical capacity across hospitals.

At Bo Government Hospital, Community Health Officer Emmanuel Maxwell Gamanga credits CDR sessions with significantly sharpening his diagnostic skills, prescription practices, and patient monitoring improvements he says are already elevating pediatric care. He urges wider support for CDR to help Sierra Leone meet its 2030 child-mortality target, as CHAMPS-SL continues producing high-quality evidence to reinforce the country’s health system and save young lives.

Makeni Hospital Strengthens Child Health Through Enhanced Review System

Makeni Regional Hospital is reporting major improvements in maternal and child care through its strengthened Child Death Review (CDR) process. Dr. Masiray Colojumah Kamara, Head of the Pediatric Department, says the review meetings have become essential for identifying gaps in care, enhancing diagnosis and monitoring skills, improving documentation, and boosting the management of critical cases. The hospital has also intensified nutritional screening for all admitted children, helping prevent severe complications before they escalate.

Support from CHAMPS-SL has further advanced these gains, providing staff training, evidence generation, and essential medical supplies. By using advanced methods such as Minimally Invasive Tissue Sampling (MITS) to determine the true causes of child deaths, CHAMPS-SL supplies reliable data that guides impactful policy and clinical decisions. Together, Makeni Regional Hospital and CHAMPS-SL are driving measurable progress toward safer care and brighter futures for children.

Driving Child Survival Through Data and Action at Makeni Regional Hospital

At Makeni Regional Hospital, the Child Death Review (CDR) process has become a vital tool in reducing preventable maternal and child deaths. By systematically analyzing each mortality case, multidisciplinary teams gain critical insights that inform policies, improve clinical care, and strengthen public health interventions. For pediatric nurse Zainab Abdulai, participating in CDR meetings has improved documentation practices and deepened understanding of key challenges, including delays in care, weak referral systems, and clinical gaps.

Supported by the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) project, these reviews translate data into actionable interventions, from staff training and emergency response improvements to advocacy for better resources and community sensitization. By turning every death into a lesson, CHAMPS and MRH are transforming Sierra Leone’s child health landscape, ensuring that each child’s life informs stronger systems and better survival outcomes.

CHAMPS-SL Strengthens Partnerships to Reduce Preventable Deaths in Makeni

The Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance Sierra Leone (CHAMPS-SL) have deepened collaboration with private hospitals in Makeni including Caring Hands, New Hope, City Garden, Branda Medical Services, Magbenteh Community Hospital, and KALPAT Medical Center to improve data collection and drive evidence-based interventions aimed at reducing preventable deaths among mothers, children, and adults in Bombali District. During a recent engagement at KALPAT, CHAMPS leaders highlighted ongoing surveillance activities, including pregnancy tracking, mortality monitoring, and the Adult MITS 2.0 study, which investigates major health conditions such as Hepatitis, Sickle Cell Disease, and HIV/AIDS.

CHAMPS emphasized the importance of the Minimally Invasive Tissue Sampling (MITS) procedure in determining precise causes of death, guiding targeted interventions such as staff training, health education, and medical supply provision. Deputy Site Director Erick Kaluma encouraged hospital staff to embrace the partnership, while KALPAT Manager Anthony Albert Sesay reaffirmed the facility’s commitment to collaboration. Through these efforts, CHAMPS-SL continues to transform surveillance data into actionable insights, strengthening public health systems and ensuring preventable deaths are documented and addressed.

CHAMPS Expands Partnerships with Private Hospitals to Strengthen Mortality Surveillance in Makeni

The Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance Sierra Leone (CHAMPS-SL) has intensified its collaboration with private healthcare institutions by engaging Caring Hands Hospital and New Hope Hospital in Makeni. The partnership meetings focused on expanding awareness of CHAMPS’ mission and identifying areas for joint action to improve child and adult health outcomes.

According to Abdulai Othman Bah, CHAMPS-SL’s Social and Behavioral Science Lead, the program’s surveillance model; combining clinical abstraction, verbal autopsy, and minimal invasive tissue sampling (MITS), produces high-quality mortality data that can shape national policies and targeted health interventions.

Highlighting the broader scope of the Adult MITS 2.0 study, Pregnancy Surveillance Coordinator Abdul Salaam Sillah noted that the initiative extends nationwide to investigate deaths linked to Hepatitis, Sickle Cell Disease, and HIV/AIDS.

Staff at both hospitals welcomed the collaboration, emphasizing its value in strengthening evidence-based healthcare delivery.

The facilities reaffirmed their commitment to work with CHAMPS on public health initiatives including health education, professional capacity building, and facility strengthening, guided by CHAMPS’ Data-to-Action (D2A) approach to reducing preventable deaths.

Child Death Review: A Practical Tool to Save Children’s Lives

At Makeni Regional Hospital (MRH), the Child Death Review (CDR) process is proving vital in reducing child and maternal mortality. Through systematic reviews of child deaths, health workers identify avoidable causes and implement corrective measures to prevent future losses.

Dr. T***y Mansaray, a medical doctor working in the pediatric department at MRH, emphasized that early medical care remains critical to saving lives. Insights from CDR meetings have prompted greater community outreach to promote timely health-seeking behavior.

Adherence to national and WHO medical protocols, even with limited resources, has also improved patient outcomes. Enhanced record-keeping and case documentation now inform ongoing staff training and quality improvement initiatives.

With support from the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) project, MRH has strengthened its response capacity through training, emergency supplies, and essential equipment.

Together, these efforts align with the Ministry of Health’s goal to reduce child and maternal deaths to 25 per 1,000 live births by 2030.
