Following the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus in Somalia, the first case was reported on 16 March 2020 in 11 months. During that time the disease affected more than 5,632 people and now has 3,757 recovered cases and 179 deaths.
Somalia is a country recovering from civil war and all government services, including health services, have been destroyed. Corona arrived in the country at a time the government was not prepared for the epidemic, and there were no specialized health facilities in the country to deal with epidemics. Patients with infectious diseases especially Coronavirus need special care including Ventilator Machines and isolations area.
At the end of April 2020, De-Martini Hospital was first set up for the care of critically ill patients and the elderly. This hospital has not been able to provide adequate services to these patients due to the lack of trained doctors and the lack of equipment in the country.
Coronavirus has now re-emerged in Somalia as unprepared and at greater risk than before because there is a new strain found in the UK, South Africa, and other countries with direct contact with Somalia.
What did We learn from COVID 19 First Wave?
We have learned that there is no health system capable of controlling this deadly disease and that the government does not have sufficient financial resources except for assistance from countries that provide medical and economic assistance to Somalia.
We have also learned that the community does not take awareness as intended and ignores the fact that the disease is present and that it is a killer that has affected the whole world.
There are also no trained health professionals to operate in intensive care units (ICUs) and treat patients who need to be fitted with ventilators.
There is also still a challenge in getting more screening for sick and suspected patients because of the cost of tests except for De Martini a government-run hospital that treats patients with the disease.
