Today, we had the privilege of joining Somali Disability Empowerment Network - SODEN in a joint meeting with National Disability Agency somalia (NDA), the national body leading disability rights and coordination across Somalia.

In this important engagement, we had the honor of meeting Mr. Mohamed Abdul Jama, Chairman of the NDA. Mr Mohamed is a leader with deep knowledge and experience in disabilities and developmental disorders within the Somali context. His dedication, compassion, and resourcefulness are clearly reflected in the way he guides the NDA with care, vision, and passion.

During the meeting, we introduced the work of Mustaqbal Center For Special Needs, exchanged perspectives, and discussed how our organizations can collaborate and support each other in advancing disability inclusion.
It became evident that there are still many untapped areas that require collective effort, joint commitment, and stronger partnerships.

With support of these leaders like Mr. Mohamed and networks such as the Somali Disability Empowerment Network, we look forward to strengthening cooperation, aligning efforts, and creating meaningful impact for persons with disabilities, especially children and families across Somalia.

We are grateful to the Somali Disability Empowerment Network led by Mr Mohamed Abdisalam for facilitating this connection and to the National Disability Agency for the warm receiption.

Our team uses role play to address the common questions and misconceptions our community often has about children with developmental disorders.

Since our establishment in April 2016, we have been committed to supporting children with neurodevelopmental and developmental disorders as well as their caregivers. Through our tailored services, many children have successfully graduated and integrated into mainstream society.

Beyond direct services, we also focus on capacity building by training caregivers and field professionals in collaboration with regional and international organizations. Our dedication to advancing knowledge led us to develop the first Somali version of a Disorders Guidebook, a milestone resource for the community.

Mustaqbal Center For Special Needs continues to bring together both national and international expertise to advance our cause of creating an inclusive and supportive society for children with special needs.

Though comprehensive research on autism in Somalia is yet to be conducted, estimates suggest that 84 in every 10,000 people are autistic.
International studies from the UK, EU, and US indicate that people of Somali descent have higher autism referral rates compared to other communities.

As the only organisation in Somalia providing dedicated facilities for children with special needs, we are proud of the positive impact of our programmes and remain committed to expanding special needs schools across the country.

We call on all stakeholders to join hands in supporting these vital initiatives.

We successfully organized a one-day awareness training for parents of children with special needs, with a special focus on developmental disorders.

The training took place on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at our Daarusalaam Center, and was facilitated by experienced professionals in the field of child development and special education.

This initiative aimed to empower parents with practical knowledge and strategies to better support their children’s growth, learning, and well-being, both at home and within their communities.

We thank all participating parents, facilitators, and team members for their valuable contributions toward making this training a success.

In 2022, Al Jazeera TV produced a powerful video highlighting the scarcity of special needs education in Somalia. The video featured Mustaqbal Center for Special Needs when we were serving only 60 students.

Today, we are proud to share how far we have come. We are now operating two schools located in Hodan district and Daarusalaam, Mogadishu. The number of students has significantly increased as we continue to expand our reach and services.

Mustaqbal Center has made a lasting impact in the areas of education integration, community awareness, and skills development. We exist to prioritize the development and protection of children with developmental disorders in Somalia.

Despite the ongoing challenges including lack of government support and infrastructure limitations, our commitment remains strong. We strive for a future where every child is seen, supported, and empowered.

A Historic Moment for Mustaqbal Center and the Special Needs Community

We were deeply honored to host H.E. Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir, our esteemed Minister of Education, Culture and Higher Education, at our World Autism Awareness Day event.

In a heartwarming and visionary address, H.E. commended Mustaqbal Center for Special Needs for its commitment to children with autism and other special needs. He recognized our efforts in empowering these incredible children and their families and took a transformative step forward.

The Minister officially granted a school to Mustaqbal Center to help us expand our services and reach more children in need across the country.

This generous gesture marks a turning point in our journey and a beacon of hope for many families still waiting for support.

H.E. Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir also used the opportunity to call upon NGOs, banks, and the wider community to join hands in supporting the construction and development of the new school, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility and inclusive education.

This is more than just a building, it’s a future of opportunity, dignity, and empowerment for children with special needs.

We thank the Minister for his leadership and call on our partners, friends, and supporters to stand with us as we take this mission to the next level.
