✨𝗢𝗻 𝟮𝟳𝘁𝗵 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, South Sudan took a historic leap in protecting its children.

The Ministry of Health - Republic of South Sudan, with the support of partners WHO - Republic of South Sudan, Gates Foundation, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, UNICEF South Sudan, and South Sudanese Women In Medicine, introduced two new life-saving 𝗣𝗖𝗩 and 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗿𝘂𝘀 vaccines to the national immunization schedule.

🔹 PCV now shields children from pneumonia and meningitis.
🔹 Rotavirus vaccine protects against severe diarrhoea.

These 𝘃𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲, 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲.The task ahead is clear: parents and caregivers must continue visiting health facilities on time so that no child is left behind.

Healthy children mean stronger families, and stronger families mean a better South Sudan. 💙

✨ 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱✨

Today, we celebrate 𝗗𝗿. 𝗙𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮 𝗔𝗹𝗶, a courageous female South Sudanese medical doctor working with 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 (𝗔𝗙𝗛). She is known for going where few dare, from the flooded villages of 𝗥𝘂𝗯𝗸𝗼𝗻𝗮 and 𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗸 to the conflict-affected counties of 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗶𝗷𝗮𝗿, 𝗞𝗼𝗰𝗵, 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗱𝗮, 𝗡𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗿, and 𝗨𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴, her story is a reminder that when women in medicine step up with courage, they deserve protection and support.

As SSWIM, we spotlight Dr. Fatima because her work reflects what we stand for: 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀, 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. This is the same commitment driving our vaccine advocacy campaigns across South Sudan, including support for the recent introduction of PCV and Rotavirus vaccines.

From July 22–24, 2025, global health leaders, innovators, and advocates convened in Maputo for the 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗺, hosted by the Governments of Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Spain, UNICEF, the Gates Foundation, and La Caixa Foundation.

We at South Sudanese Women In Medicine (SSWIM) were honored to be among the 700+ delegates at this milestone gathering dedicated to ending preventable child deaths.

🎉 𝗔 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝘂𝗱𝗮𝗻:

The Ministry of Health - Republic of South Sudan, represented by Mr. George Awzenio Legge (EPI Manager) and SSWIM represented by Dr. Koiti Emmily, were formally recognized for incredible work done to ensure the successful introduction of PCV and Rotavirus vaccines, a historic achievement that strengthens our country’s immunization landscape.

🌸 𝙔𝙚𝙨, 𝙬𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙛𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙨, 𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙮𝙢𝙗𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮!
Representatives of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the Spanish Kingdom, and Forum organizers presented us with certificates and a bouquet in recognition of our collective commitment and effort.

🗣 In her powerful remarks of acceptance, 𝗗𝗿. 𝗘𝗺𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆, 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱:

She emphasized that this success is rooted in 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙨𝙩, 𝙡𝙤𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙪𝙣𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙞𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙨.
She closed by assuring the audience that “𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙗𝙚 𝙣𝙤 𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠.”

🍽️ Following the recognition ceremony, the Gates Foundation hosted an intimate celebration dinner for delegates from 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝘂𝗱𝗮𝗻, 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮, the three countries that have introduced new vaccines in 2024 and 2025. It was a heartwarming moment of reflection, solidarity, and shared vision among peers working to protect every child, everywhere.
