In Juba, many South Sudanese have hardly come across a job advertisement by Nilepet. Accordingly, Nilepet has never advertised the recruitment of its staff and workers. If this has ever happened, the selection procedure is based on nepotism, tribal lineage, and familial connections. Nilepet is the national oil corporation, an institution tasked to oversee and manage oil-operating companies in the Republic of South Sudan. So, the recruitment of its staff and the appointment of its manager director should be felt by every South Sudanese from the 64+ tribes based on the merit of qualifications, experiences, and regional representation. Sadly—the appointing authority has been appointing Nilepet’s Managing Director from one ethnicity—guess by yourself which one.

Yet an ample number of graduates are looking for jobs right now. Employ them today. Nilepet estimated employment capacity is maxed countrywide at 5,000 staff and workers, and this may go beyond in the future as the country is vastly rich in oil.

Statement of Solidarity with the people of Southern Unity

Today, marked the eighth day when dark clouds hovered over the civilians of Leer and Mayiendit Counties of South Sudan’s Unity State. This was when the armed men were unleashed on the innocent children and women. The latest reports indicated that the attackers have withdrawn to the territory of their control with the looted properties and goods of civilians. They have plundered hundreds of cows, and chickens which are the livelihoods of people.

Civilians who escaped into the swamps of the River Nile, and the surrounding bushes are returning slowly. They are coming to find nothing; their houses and shelters are burned down and vandalized. Many people have been killed, and a big number of them are missing since the beginning of the fighting. This is an unimaginable tragedy of human beings done by fellow human beings. It is being condemned in the strongest terms possible. We feel and share the agony of our people. With all our heart feelings, we render our solidarity with those innocent children, women, and elderly people who hardly escaped these atrocities.

Several r**e cases and abduction of women and young girls have happened during the fighting. Girls as young as 12 years are r**ed and abducted as s*x slaves, and their whereabouts are still unknown. There is a high record of civilians who are nursing their wounds and sick people under trees without proper treatment. The medical personnel was evacuated during the onset of the fighting, and the attackers have looted the facilities of medical supplies too. Few humanitarian workers have also lost their lives. The concerns over food and shelter are high on demands knowing that the rainy season has just started. There are high chances that children will shelter under trees, and common diseases will be life-threatening to them.

It is unfortunate that these particular communities have been subjected to unimaginable suffering and heinous crimes which are beyond human comprehension since January 2014. We are saddened by this human tragedy and loss of lives, and we are standing in solidarity with the people of Leer and Mayiendit who have lost everything. This is a moment of mourning and a week to remember throughout the history of the people of South Sudan and Southern Unity state in particular.

We are asking anyone touched by this human tragedy to post this message in his/her social media timeline to show solidarity with the children and women of the affected population. Join us to stand in solidarity with the children and women of Leer and Mayiendit Counties at this critical moment.
