🔍 Understanding Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) – What You Need to Know!

At POKI Advanced Medical Clinic, we often meet patients asking, “Is a UTI a s*xually transmitted disease?” Let's set the record straight and help our community stay informed and healthy.

🚨 What is a UTI?

A Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is an infection that occurs in any part of your urinary system – this includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Most infections affect the lower urinary tract, particularly the bladder and urethra.

🦠 UTIs are usually caused by bacteria, especially a common one called E. coli, which normally lives in the intestines but can enter the urinary tract and cause infection.

❤️ Is a UTI a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD)?

👉 No, a UTI is NOT an STD.
However, s*xual activity can increase the risk of getting a UTI. This is because bacteria can be pushed toward the urethra during s*x, especially in women.

📌 Important Note: UTIs can also affect people who are not s*xually active — even children and the elderly. So while s*x may be a contributing factor, it is not the only cause.

🔍 Common Symptoms of a UTI:

Burning or pain during urination

Frequent urge to urinate, even if little comes out

Cloudy, dark, or bloody urine

Bad-smelling urine

Pain or pressure in the lower abdomen

Fever (in more serious infections)

✅ How to Prevent UTIs:

💧 Drink plenty of water every day
🧻 Always wipe from front to back
🍑 Urinate before and after s*xual activity
🛁 Avoid using harsh soaps or douches near the ge***al area
👖 Wear breathable cotton underwear and avoid tight-fitting clothes

🩺 When to See a Doctor

"Al Doc can a woman get pregnant if she has unprotected meeting on her ovulation day and takes a P2 the next day", a client asked our our staff.

And this was his reply to the client.

Yes, a woman can still get pregnant if she has unprotected meeting on her ovulation day and takes Postinor-2 (P2) the next day.

Here’s why:

1. Ovulation is the peak fertility window

Ovulation day is the time when the egg is released and is most likely to be fertilized.

Sp*rm can survive inside the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days.

If meeting happens on ovulation day, sp*rm can meet the egg very quickly, often before P2 has time to work effectively.

2. How P2 works

Postinor-2 contains levonorgestrel, which mainly works by delaying ovulation.

If ovulation has already occurred, which is the case if you're taking it after ovulation, its effectiveness is significantly reduced.

It does not terminate a pregnancy if fertilization and implantation have already occurred.

3. Timing is critical

P2 is most effective when taken before ovulation.

Taking it after ovulation, especially after meeting on ovulation day, means there's a higher chance it won't prevent pregnancy.

Conclusion:

Yes, pregnancy is still possible in this scenario. If the woman misses her period, she should take a pregnancy test about 2 weeks after the meeting or if her period is more than 7 days late..

An encounter with a client on Thursday morning.

🩺🚗 "Doc, I Feel Sick Every Time I Travel!" — Let’s Talk About Motion Sickness

This week at the clinic, a young lady came in just before her planned road trip. She looked concerned and said, “Doc, every time I travel—especially in cars or buses—I start feeling dizzy, my stomach churns, and before I know it, I’m throwing up. Is there anything I can do?”

This is a classic case of motion sickness—a common condition that affects both children and adults, especially during car, boat, or air travel.

🌪️ So, What Exactly Is Motion Sickness?

Motion sickness happens when your brain receives conflicting signals from your eyes, inner ears (vestibular system), and body.

Your inner ear senses motion.

Your eyes may be focused on something still, like a book or phone.

Your brain gets mixed messages — and that confusion is what causes the symptoms.

😵 Common Symptoms Include:

Nausea or vomiting

Dizziness

Sweating

Headache

Pale skin

Feeling tired or generally unwell

These symptoms can begin within minutes of starting a trip and may last as long as the motion continues.

💊 How We Help at the Clinic

I explained to her that motion sickness is very manageable. At the clinic, we assess your individual case and recommend the best option, which might include:

Antihistamines
Ginger supplements – a natural remedy that works for some people

In some cases, we explore behavioral strategies and relaxation techniques

✅ Quick Tips for Prevention:

Sit in the front seat of the car or near the wing of the plane

Look at the horizon, not your phone or book

Get fresh air – open a window or use vents

Eat light meals before trave

She left the clinic that day with medication in hand, confidence in her step, and a few practical tips. Most importantly, she left knowing that her condition was nothing unusual — and that help was just a consultation away.

🌍 Planning a Trip Soon?

Don’t let motion sickness keep you from enjoying the journey. Visit us at the clinic — we’ll help you find the right solution so you can travel in comfort.
