Message for International Midwives Day – May 5th
Good morning, followers
Today, May 5th, we join the rest of the world in celebrating International Midwives Day — a day dedicated to honoring the heart, hands, and courage of midwives everywhere.
As the Chairperson of the South Sudan Nurses and Midwives Association (SSNAMA) in Western Bahr el Ghazal, I proudly salute every midwife who rises each day with a single goal: to bring life safely into this world and to stand by mothers through one of the most important journeys of their lives.
This year's theme reminds us of the power and potential of midwifery in shaping healthier communities. Midwives are not just birth attendants — we are educators, advocates, and protectors of women's and newborns' health. In South Sudan, especially in Wau and the surrounding areas, midwives work under challenging conditions, yet with unwavering commitment, compassion, and professionalism.
On this day, I call on communities, health partners, and our government to invest more in midwifery — through training, resources, safe working environments, and respect for our profession. When midwives are empowered, maternal and newborn deaths decrease, families thrive, and nations grow stronger.
To every midwife listening: stand tall. Your work saves lives and builds the future.
To the public: respect, support, and appreciate your midwives — we are with you at the beginning of life and walk with you through care and hope.
Happy International Midwives Day!
Together, let us celebrate, recognize, and uplift midwives — the guardians of life.
Thank you.
