How can primary prevention transform lives? Colombia is showing us the way. 🇨🇴
Non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension are rising fast in Colombia, putting women and children at particular risk. Hyperglycaemia in pregnancy affects nearly one in five births globally, and its consequences can last a lifetime.
That’s why the Vida Nueva: Healthy Generations for Colombia project, supported by the World Diabetes Foundation and Fundación Vida Nueva (FVN), is so important. Building on more than a decade of progress, this initiative is scaling up primary prevention across ten departments—reaching over 100,000 pregnant women and introducing school-based interventions to promote healthy living.
The approach is simple yet effective: strengthen community health workers, embed prevention into health and education systems, and empower families to take charge of their health. From screening 98,000 women for gestational diabetes to training 1,600 healthcare professionals, the results speak for themselves.
As Humberto Mendoza Charris, FVN’s Project Responsible, shared: “Primary health care isn’t just in a doctor’s office—it’s in the community.” And that’s where real change begins.
